I once had a theory that if men wrote down the 10 dumbbest things they'd ever done, 7 out of 10 would be women-related (attracting, impressing, winning them), or alcohol-related (nuff said), and probably a few of them were both.

As I sit back and review my life I fear I may have accumulated a perfect 10 of 10.

So, what is the dumbest thing musicaly related that you've done? Come on, this isn't theory, it's a question!

Oh, man! OK, one of my very early gigs was a birthday party for a classmate. A cute girl from one of my classes was invited and I wanted her to notice me (remember my theory?). I was all of 14 years old playing a no-name Japanese guitar through an Alamo tube amp (anybody remember those?). The other guitarist was plugged into the amp, too (This must have been 1969). After awhile the sound started cutting in and out so I started fiddling around with stuff in the back of the amp and promptly electrocuted myself. The shock sent me across the lawn. Apparently, that blew the amp's fuse and our gig was done. Just as well, our repetoire at the time was short and we were running out of songs to play. Hey, we still got paid.

Anyway, the guys laughed at me, the girls were concerned until they saw I was OK and then they laughed at me, too. I got my wish, she noticed me. In fact, our gig was the only thing anyone talked about at school on Monday morning. You know, it's those embarrassing moments that occur in your youth that really scar you for the rest of your life.

The amp was never the same after that . . . and neither was I.

I've been playing since 1963 so that makes it 45 years, plenty of tmes to do a lot of dumb things but I never get upset about them. Better to just laugh them off, don't you agree ?

Gotta laugh them off. I'd be paralyzed with guilt and regret otherwise!

You know Steve, that observation is extremely profound, and likely right to the point. In thinking back, the dumbest thing I've ever done likely involves those two elements....alcohol, a woman, and the wrong thing said at the wrong time.

Keep in mind, however, as in the poem "The Road Not Taken'', one will never know how life might have turned out otherwise.

I'm looking forward to that cup of coffee, and a long talk.

Doc

Hi Eddie,
Yes 45 years is a long time........but I'm gonna keep going 'till I nail that C chord

You sound like a happy guy Eddie, keep it happy, keep it up there, I'm just a dumb Brit who's been round the block too many times.
Ok pal, keep it rockin'

I don't know about the U.S but in the U.K we have a saying.

Well the 70's and 80's were a blur to me as well. What are the dumbest things I've done? I don't think I want to remember but I have packed in the drink now, so things have got clearer. Now I'm in denial.
I had to pack in smoking, because I got Bronchitis, however since I did kick all that stuff, I've been able to buy a dozen guitars, so that was one of the smartest things I did, just thought I'd mention this in passing.

Unfortunately true with me as well. I started lessons with a great teacher back in around 1967. After about 3 months, I got impatient to get out there and playing so I got together with a couple of other guys and formed a band. We didn't do badly and by that point, I also had the usual after school part time job at a local grocery store. The short of it: with no time left over, I dropped the lessons and so never really learned how to read well. No doubt, I'd have learned a lot more techniques (or at least much earlier in life) and I'd certainly be more versatile today.

Whether I'd be playing today instead of doing payroll is impossible to say. But having just gotten back into playing about 4 years ago, I'm in the position of not remembering any of the old songs and not being able to read well enough to just go and sit in with people. I am considering making up that deficiency (after 40 something years) though in that I was told that our local community college has an adult class for people like myself who once read at least a little but haven't in years and either haven't played at all or just jammed around with themselves.

As to the "7 out of 10" theory -- yep, guilty there. I dropped the lessons for a band 'cause playing whatever was hot at the time was a lot cooler to girls than playing the melodies to your parent's tunes. I did get the girl, but she and my band days are both long gone

My way of describing it is that someone passed me a joint in 1972 and the next thing I knew it was 1991. I'm told I had fun. I also acheived nothing. Wouldn't recommend it as a lifestyle choice.

I tore an exquisite Washburn semi-hollow that had a brilliant cherry finish all to pieces when I was 13...thinking that I could fix it because the pickup jack receded into the body...
