What did bassists use for wah pedals between 1966 and 1971? It seems like only the Vox wah was in exhistence then, so they were confined to this, and other manufacturers and the bass wahs didn't come into being until later?

Any bassists from back then remember what was around?

Most bass players didn't use pedals back then. And if we were so inclined, the Vox was pretty much the only choice. Some of us did use fuzz boxes though.

In that time period all I remember being used was a fuzz. Something tells me that a chorus type unit was used too. I just can't place it in my dying memory banks.

I knew a bass player in the late 60's that used a Mosrite fuzz box.

If your thinking about something like the Bootsy Collins funk sound, that was through a MU-TRON III Envelope Filter (aka Auto-Wah) made back in the day by a company called Mustronics. This line was later picked up by another company, HAZ Laboratories, who called their version the MU-TRON III+. This pedal was also used by Stevie Wonder on keys and is one of Jerry Garcia's signature guitar effects. This may be later than the time frame your asking about.

I don't recall any recording artists using a wah from memory although they may have. I was playing in the upstate NY area (Utica/Syracuse) back then and I don't either recall any local bassists using a Wah.

(Fuzz, yes ... I agree with other posters here that there were a few doing that.)

I had a Vox because I also played 6 string but if I ever plugged a bass into it (and I probably did), it must not have impressed me. I see some Wahs on the market now that claim to be voiced for bass and that does make some sense. Of course, I'm biased in that I tended to use the wah and fuzz very sparingly even on lead.
