Again and again - metal is in the pickups and the playability of the neck.
a. Try a few guitars at a dealer near you.
b. Find one that feels great to your fingers - that's the only way to test if the neck is playable or not.
c. Order a bright metal pickup. When I hear "bright" I think of Seymour Duncans - the JB, George Lynch Screaming Demon or Distortion.
d. if you want some extra to the metal add one of the EMG active boosts to a lower output pickup. Lower output goes (most of the time) with better sustain, going active goes well with making it scream...

Those sound like very good suggestions. Thanks.

Throughout my playing years, I have been loyal to two guitar brands: Ibanez and Fender. I also play metal, and if you are looking for a rich and distorted metal tone, you can't go wrong with an Ibanez Prestige. However, if what you want is versitility, go with a US made strat. My american standard can get away with playing metal just as well as my other guitars, and transitions beautifully to cleaner tones, which most Ibanez's fail to accomplish.

PS: This is the first time I have heard of the Ibanez FR1620, it looks
fantastic.

That's great if you're a girl. Come to think of it, I wouldn't hold it against you if you're a dude either. To each his/her own.

Those are two of my favorite guitar brands, as well. Because I own and American Deluxe Fender Tele, I'm considering the Ibanez for the metal tones. But that Billy Corgan looks so tempting for the versatility! And the Schecter has some nice features too. I'm torn! :?:

Well, I finally made my choice for a new guitar. Actually, I have two new guitars. And wouldn't you know that neither of them are among the three that I was originally considering. But I'm extremely happy with them both. Comments here were very helpful.

My only disappointment is that I had to trade my 2005 American Deluxe Telecaster for one of them. But I think that I got the better end of the deal because I received a nearly new '57 Vintage Reissue Stratocaster Hot Rod. Still, that Tele was nice.

The Strat plays great and with more bass attack than my Tele. It's not as bright as the Tele, of course, but it's plenty bright and it's more versatile. The neck feels like it was made for my hands. The sustain if fantastic. The weight and balance are even more comfortable than my old Tele. I can do the hard rock and metal on this guitar, but also stuff that requires brighter cleanness. The SCN pickups combined with the bridge Dimarzio Tone Zone are ideal. The Tone Zone really allows wonderful lead tones and high sustain power chords. You just can't go wrong with a Strat, can you? Since this is the Fender forum, I'm including a pic of the new Strat below.

My other guitar is a Dean Soltero SL, made in Japan with custom Dean Dimarzio Humbuckers. I got a deal on it that I just couldn't pass on. It's new. I was thinking that I wanted a bolt Fender and a set-neck Les Paul, this Dean meets my Les Paul needs better than I imagined. The quality and tone are incredible, especially for hard rock and metal. But the pickups also do clean extremely well.

There, I'm down to two guitars that are perfect for me so I'm not jonesing for a new guitar anymre.

Now ... which amp???????????????????

'Gotta pass on any recommendations on this one.

These ears are totally unable to tell the difference in heavily distorted, high volume instrument-amp combinations. 'Am an admittedly "Shred-illiterate."

In this opinion, they all sound like $25 pawnshop made-in-Ethiopia guitars run through a rescued-from-the-curb garbage console television, in that application.

I know this is an odd question for the Fender Forum, but whatever, I hope everyone can be objective. I'm looking for another guitar to be used mainly for hard rock and metal. I don't like Floyd Rose trems and I'm thinking I'll stick with a hardtail bridge. I want bright tone, long sustain, and a fast playing neck. I don't want to pay more than $1,500 for a quality guitar and I want it made in the USA or Japan. Here are the three I'm considering right now:

Fender Billy Corgan Strat: $1,200 (w/case)
http://www.samash.com/webapp/wcs/stores ... emid=70482

Schecter Hollywood Classic: $1,000 (no case)
http://www.gearhounds.com/index.asp?Pag ... ProdID=671

Ibanez Prestige FR FR1620: $1,000 (w/case)
http://www.proguitarshop.com/product.ph ... goryID=494

Or, what other similar shred guitar would you recommend?
Not exactly sure how to vote but personally I will chip in vote #1 for the Prestige. Love those frickin things. Plus i already have a Corganized Strat :)

A guy who likes to shred switched or supplemented his Ibanez Vai with the Amercian Deluxe HSS. It's got every feature and a modern tone for the heavy distortion and shredding that he likes to do.

The reason I refer to him is that I'm a bending blues player. Metal to me sounds like you just play the bass line over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over, then drop down to the 5th string and play the bass line over and over and over and over and over and over, really, really fast, and then like you know do the pull-off/hammer on thing for a while - really, loud and distorted. Not dissing Metal, but I just can't hear it. Everybody's got their thing.

Metal uses the blues and pentatonic scales liberally and utilizes a lot of dramatic string bending and, unlike blues music, also employs a variety of additional scales (some very exotic). You have to remember that there are different types of "metal" music and many metal bands. Some are hard and simplistic, others are hard and complex.

Several shredding guitarists have reputations as virtuosos. I think the main component of metal is a high-gain amp combined with pickups and effects that achieve long sustain and crunch. Not everybody is attracted to crystal clean tones. Personally, I like a variety of guitar-centric music and I think clean to sustained-gain all have their place. Metal music has put a lot of techniques like floating whammy, pinch harmonics, tapping, scratching, damping, down-tuning, etc. into common guitar practice.

There are a lot of boring blues players who play the same riffs and runs over and over and who never experiment with coloring their tone. Metal encourages guitarists to try new things.

I'd suggest looking into more popular metal acts and giving them a try. You may be surprised at the level of skill that you hear.

I didn't care for any of the models that were posted. If I had to choose, I would want a Custom Shop Version of a 1959 Fender Strat with a Rosewood Fretboard,Seymore Duncan Vintage Pups, Daphne Blue Finish, vintage hardware, and a Mint green pickguard.

The poll is over because I made my decision on two guitars and neither of the guitars are chose were among any of the models I originally listed (though I still thing those are all excellent guitars for the money).

But, the original request was for the guitar to cost less than $1,500. Your dream guitar is outstanding, but that custom shop sweety would probably cost, what, $10,000 or more? I want David Gilmour's personal Black Strat, but it ain't gonna happen.

My Vintage RI '57 Hot Rod Strat comes somewhat close to the guitar you described. I'm happy with her. The updated neck is perfect for shredding.
