Right now I'm using a VooDoo Lab Sparkle Drive and an Ibanez TS-9.

Well, since your didn't specify if this was for guitar or not, I'm gonna name some of my favorite bass od/distortion boxes.

Tech 21 VT Bass
MXR M-80 Bass DI
Fulltone BassDrive

The driven channels on my amp are garbage, so I play through a clean channel (full gain) using a Digitech Grunge stompbox. Goes great with a P-90, very good thick bass sound with drive at the same time. As for my Strat, goes just about the same except I use the bridge and middle instead of just the bridge. Works great. :)

TS 808 or Visual Sound Route 66. I like the Route 66 because it has a compressor built in.

Man, I go through overdrive phases within months of each other.
But here are the ones I go through...

The YELLOW one is a '70s DOD Preamp/Overdrive
The 2 in the lower left-hand corner are '80s Ibanez overdrives.
The black one pictured at the bottom is a Prescription Electronics RX Overdriver.

I only have an overdrive channel on my amp :(
I plan on getting a pedal eventually.

I normally don't play with distortion. It's a rare thing. But when I do, it's either the dirty settings on the amp or a EHX Nano Muff Overdrive I've got in a drawer someplace. The Nano nails the Sabbath tone to a T.

I've been a big fan of the DOD 250 Preamp for a few years now...

It's so transparent, and 'elastic' (if you play gently the sound won't break up - but bash your strings and your in fuzz terratory!)

Someone on HarmonyCentral descibed it as the 'anti tube - screamer' - which I love!

Notice it doesn't have a tone control - why would you need a tone control on a decent overdive? It's sole job is to overdrive your signal, which the 250 does expertly!

Warm, melting, controllable niceness!

The only distortion I'm using right now is a RAT pedal. I'm planning on getting a Ibanez Tube Screamer soon, and hopefully a replacement for my Dunlop wah-wah, because it is picking up a radio station way too well for my liking.

For distortion/ od I get it all from my Line 6 head (and I mean "all" -- if you want distortion/ OD, then Line 6 is the way to go).
Then I use a single Korg multi-effects unit to dial in additional compression, EQ, delay, and phase/ flanger. The Korg can also add distortion/ and OD if I wanted, but (like I said above) with the Line 6 head, it is just not needed.

It's a pretty simple noise-free setup that really works for me. Just my $0.02...
