I got back into the guitar about 18 months ago, after a long absence. Up until a few weeks ago, I was basically teaching myself. I have quite a few lick library dvd's, and various other teaching tools. About three weeks ago, I had my first real music lesson. I have to say, I'm really enjoying it a lot. I can now read music, and I'm becoming familiar with notes up and down the fretboard. I have my lessons here at home, this afternoon was my third. This guy has been teaching me some "good" habits, and slowly I'm starting to forget my old bad habits. I should have done this years ago, I'm having a ball, and learning at the same time. I jammed with the guy for the first time today, it was very cool. It sounded pretty tight too, looking forward to nest week already :D

Anyone else ever taken lessons? Not just about playing guitar, but learning to read music too?

I take a half hour lesson every week, My teacher helps me "finish" things
I wouldnt go every week but he is my buddie and his rate is very reasonable. If you can find one that keeps your interest up as well as looking out for YOUR TIME not his/hers it will be very helpful

I took piano lessons years and years ago, and did the choir bit in school. I can read music (It came back to me finally) and it is a great help. I would love to take guitar lessons but I travel much too much with work to be able to keep any kind of regular schedule, unfortunately.

What part of Scotland are you in, Snowy?? I spent several wonderful years in Edzell years ago...

I'm in the Clyde Valley Troublecall, central Scotland. I visited Edzell base a number of times, I used to roadie for a band who gigged up there.

Way back in about 1969, I took classical guitar lessons, it was good I really liked it and it was all done reading from music. The teacher was from the Royal College of Music in Manchester [UK ] A very accomplished player. I was doing this for a few months and then the band called, I had to go.
They did however mention how my musicianship skills had taken a good turn, I was always intending to get back to it but never did.
I've never actually had electric guitar lessons, that was all done from watching and listening to bands when I was a kid and just generally picking things up here and there, to this day.

Ah, it would be too much of a coincidence if I had heard the band. I was there in 1974 through 1978....

Not ringing a bell...but the old pea brain doesn't work like it used to. But thanks for bringing back fond memories. I loved my time in your country. Would go back in a heartbeat....

'Have not and somewhat regret it.

Playing freely-casually without the 'drudgery' of practice still remains more important than 'really learning' at this point.

Maybe someday.

I don't think you would regret it JSJH, I know what you mean about the "drudgery" of practice. But this guy teaching me, suggested I spice up my practise routines. Rather than use my acoustic all the time, he advised me to hook up one of my electrics, some effects, and have some fun with it. I really enjoy the practice time now, and it gets the work done :)

I took lessons since I started until now. I decided to break off just last week since I know a good bit, and now it's just a matter or practicing and getting better I guess. I really enjoyed lessons and had them for a good while, and it sounds like they're going well for you too!! Good luck with everything and have fun!!!

I took a lesson or 2 back when I very first started playing - I already knew how to read music as I had been playing saxophone for a few years before picking up the guitar - other than reading chord patterns and such, I have never used my music reading ability for my guitar playing - im sure some will object this, but I just havent - I am a great sight reader for sax and percussion, but as far as guitar, just never crossed paths with it

Concerning lessons, I cant imagine spending money on lessons now that YOUTUBE is available - you can learn a lot from that site - Now, starting out, learning the basics, having someone physically in front of you helping you probably isnt a bad idea

I hear what you're saying, re youtube. And you're probably right, but the lessons work for me. Perhaps because it's costing me money, I'm taking things more seriously. Either way I'm gonna continue to enjoy it to the max, roll on Tuesday :)

Hi Snowy

I'm a great believer in learning good habits first and in my view the only way is through professonal tuition.
I take an hour lesson every week and vary it, sometimes electric, sometimes acoustic and others pure classical.
Not being in a band I also find it a great way to learn interaction and how you have to tie down timing.
I learnt to read music way back in school and somehow remembered it all, suppose its only the alphabet.
