Any of you know this story? When Hendrix arrived in London in 1966, he wanted to jam on stage w/clatpon and cream. Everyone in Londond thought clapton was GOD, and then this dude came along. Hendrix played with his teeh, behind his neck, through his legs, and clapton just stood there and played. Clapton put his guitar down, and just walked off stage.

I quote: "Is he that good?" Clapton later became friends with him :)

-The Screamin' J

sorry all you clapton fans ;)

The story is an interesting piece of rock music history. I am sure when Hendrix hit the scene he was very intimidating to every other rock guitarist that saw him play at the time.

I am definatly a bigger fan of Jimi then Clapton but I don't think there was any kind of a competition between them..Clapton had and still has a great career and if Jimi was still around I bet he'd still be playing...

...I wonder if hendrix would have done like carlos santana and do compilations with younger musicians..maybe even on rap/ hip hop tracks..it wouldn't have surprised me at all.

"In a particularly over confident gesture Hendrix asked if he could jam with Cream at their gig at Central London Polytechnic. Hendrix took the stage and tore through a version of 'Killing Floor' in double time. Cream soon regretted allowing him to join them. Hendrix's outrageous stage antics and dazzling guitar playing caused Clapton to leave the stage in a state of shock. He asked Chas Chandler afterwards "Is he always that f***ing good?" "

Cream paid him a compliment by letting him play with them. All Hendrix did was act like a certified jerk and show them up in return for their hospitality. He had only been in England a week. Imagine a guy you dont know, asking if he could come into your house, and then show you up. I like both guitarist, but Clapton had reason to be upset.

edit: I read on elsewhere, to find that Clapton states he was in pure shock and awe over Hendrix's playing at said show, never upset

Similar to the Pete Townsend / Clapton story:
After seeing Jimi play in a London Pub one night Pete Townsend called up Eric and asked him to meet at the movies. They met, sat through the movie without talking and at the end when the lights came up Pete turned to Eric and said 'I've just seen a guy who is going to put us out of business'. 8)

Jimi cut everybody. Just a little friendly competition

But music isn't sports - there's plenty of room for all and everyone, 'cept Jimi, survived!

In the second paragraph of your post I understand your view. However I don't think hendrix was out to "show him up" but he was new to England and was given an opportunity to play with the most popular band around..so I can't blame Hendrix a bit for not holding back..he simply did what he does. Was he a "show-off"? Perhaps..but that's what I would have done if given the chance, and have done before..just not with a band anywhere near as big as Cream at the time..

I also can't really blame Clapton for being upset, but hey...he is in an industry where someone better can come along and you don't cry over it..you just go on with what you do..and maybe learn along the way. and besides..I am sure there were some that didn't like hendrix and loved Clapton..so all is fair IMO.

Ah,,I see, cool. Actually I kinda had trouble believing someone with Claptons talent and fame at the time would feel "shown up" by anyone..it makes a lot more sense that he would be impressed...after all, good recognizes good.

Jack Bruce quoted Clapton from the first time he heard Jimi : Oh my god! This is like Buddy Guy on acid!

I wonder if Clapton panicked before or after he was running around London slapping up the silly "Clapton Is God" graffiti?

Hendrix was technically much better than Clapton. But Clapton has his fans. Music is primarily a matter of personal taste fitting in with one's personal experiences with life. Some people prefer Clapton, some Hendrix, some neither ... all are correct in their choice.

It's nice to have such wide ranging choices in music these days, and wide ranging choices in so many gifted guitarists.

Two completely different players and styles, and neither is "better" to me.

I've heard hard-core blues men say they hate Clapton because he's a crappy blues player. Well, yeah, he's not a great "blues" player, but I don't think he ever tried to be THE blues players. He's just a guitar player, and he's played a lot of different things. He has a pretty blues-Y styles, but he is what he is. And he's damn good at it.

It's almost impossible to compare two guitar players as being better than the other. That is, unless, you have two students, trying to play the exact same style, with the exact same gear, and the exact same song or something. Even then, is the one that's more like the original necessarily "better"?
