The Shadows.

Red Sparowes are my favorite. There's an album by Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and John Frusciante that is pretty great, and they also released an album which is basically one big jam with Juan Alderete on bass and Omar's brother on drums that is pretty epic.

this jumps to mind right away if we're just talking about rock-instrumental groups, but i saw some people post about pat metheny and weather report, so i'll just put in that I think John Coltrane is the pinnacle of humanity, every one of his groups destroyed and he seemed like a pretty amazing and interesting person.
