On a Mac, various programs/services can be added to the Menu Bar (the white area at the top of the screen) - some by a check box in their preferences (like control panels) and others are menu items only by design (like CPU/Network meters).

On my menu bar I have (left to right):

GrowlTunes (iTunes notifier),
BOINC (a distributed computing program - uses my spare CPU cycles),
SMARTReporter (watches my disks),
Visor (a terminal shortcut),
SoundSource (easy access for audio interfaces),
Apple - Sync (allows me to Sync my computer with .Mac,
Menu Meters (CPU and Network usage),
Apple - Displays (change display settings - I use 2 monitors sometimes),
Apple - Airport (wireless control),
Apple - Sound Volume,
Apple - Battery Status,
Apple - Keyboard Control,
Apple - Date + Time,
Apple - Fast User Switching,
Apple - Spotlight.

I eliminate some from time to time.

The area at the bottom of a Mac screen is called the Dock (this like the Windows Task Bar) - there you can drag applications or documents to it to allow easy access - think of them as aliases. Any program that is not already in the Dock will be added to the Dock and removed when it finishes running.

I tend to add all of the applications that I run a lot to the Dock - so I have all of the music/video/audio programs at hand. I have lots of screen space (my MacBook Pro is 1440 x 900).

Not every Mac user does what I do - I tend to be a little different. I'm a long time Apple Mac user - since 1984. I have the Dock set to be very small, no magnification when you mouse over it, no animations when things go in/out of the Dock.

Hope that this helps a little bit.

I have tons of wallpaper. I get bored easily, looking at the same wallpaper. I tend to change the wallpaper about once every two weeks.
