I just picked up a Passport P250 this weekend. I got it home and discovered it was way too loud for my apartment so I tried running headphones through one of the monitor jacks. I only had sound in one headphone speaker so I tried using a "Y" adapter to utilize both monitor jacks. That didn't work, so being the "genius" that I am I started trying other jacks. I put one end of the Y adapter into the "send" jack just above the monitor jacks while the other end of the adapter was still in one of the monitor jacks. This resulted in a very loud noise and the system went into "protect" mode. I turned the system off and on again and now there's nothing but white noise coming out of the main jacks. The monitor jacks still work fine, the speakers work fine and my head phones still work fine. But both of the main (or left) side channels are putting out that white noise. It remains constant regardless of volume level or whether there are instruments plugged in. I checked the fuse and it's still ok. I even replaced it with a spare fuse and got the same noise.

So, did I blow the main amp? Did I blow the main channels? Anyone have an idea? I'm quite frustrated about it.

I'd appreciate any sort of help anyone can offer.
Thanks,

Tony

Bring it back, don't tell them what you did, get a new one. Don't do it again!

Unfortunately I got it "used" from someone. I traded a Fender Champ plus $100 for it. I tested it out before I gave him the money and the Champ.

I'd guess you damaged the pre-amp. The send output is just after the pre-amp so you probably drew too much current thru it. It's gonna take a tech to figure it out. If you're bent on trying to fix it yourself, you might be able to do a visual of the board and see what got burnt. That does't mean you'll be able to see any possible fried traces on the board or internal damage to a op-amp chip.

I was afraid of that. Ok, so if that is the case, do you think it'd be possible to run an external pre-amp? Or would it have to bypass the existing pre-amp for that to work?

You might be able to get away with running a pre-amp output into the return. Of course, without knowing whats wrong, you run the risk of damaging the pre-amp.

Before doing further damage, I'd suggest taking it to a tech at a repair shop or electronics repair depot. It might just need a component replaced seeing that the monitors, speakers and headphones still work? Good luck!
