I didn't go in any particuliar order. If I did, Jeff Beck would be in the top 5 on my list.

John Frusciante is my biggest influence and the only guitarist I really count on any of my lists.

Actually I am surprised that I forgot to put Frusciante on my list. He is definately in my top 10. The guy is amazing and not pretentous at all... considering he has the talent to be.

Dave Navarro as well should have been on my list..I am sure I forgot many since I have a horrible memory.

I just looked through some songs on my mp3 player, CDs and albums. I probably missed a lot that I would have named...for example...John Jorgenson, Will Ray, Jerry Donahue, Mike Eldred, Jeff Baxter, Walter Becker, James Wilsey, Greg Koch, etc...

Hey--it's all opinion--I see names on other lists that wouldn't be in my top 500 or possibly even 1000. And I'm sure that's true for my list & others--I do like seeing what others think, it may remind me of guitarists I forgot--or I may check out someone I'm not familiar with.

As to certain guitarists I left off--again opinion. I intentionally left off some very talented guitarists, simply because their music does do it for me. I acknowledge their skill at playing, but I can't get into them.

I went beyond strictly rock guitarists and added blues, jazz, and even a couple of classical guitarists.

First, Rock guitarists was too restrictive for one person.
Second, those blues & jazz players influenced a lot of rock players--including me.
Third, I love the blues.
Fourth, I felt like it.

So, I stand by my list--if anyone is interested why I included any guitarist on my list--just ask--I'll give you an answer.

As for Dweezil--I like him because he's quirky. So it's fun to listen to him play. I like to play quirky too, although my quirky is different than his quirky. In my books, that makes him interesting, and worthy of the top 100.

I guess the best thing about Frusciante is that he is so modest about everything that has to do with music. He has all the talent in the world and sometimes it comes out in his music, but mostly he sticks to the simple solos that he loves so much and he has a good head for music and what it means to play music. Even though he can, he doesn't show people how good he is because he knows it will bring down the song and him as a musician

+1

And also why some other players made my list...personally I don't judge a player by how technical or fast they are, I judge them by the personality in their playing and how they contribute to the band/music. Originality and innovation to me is far more genious then someone who has trained "classically" for years so they are fast..but can't play with others well or do anything imaginative or innovative.

I sort of agree with your point. With David Gilmour and Billy Gibbons being two of my top favorite guitarists, I certainly appreciate innovation, creativity, tone, and especially timing and feel.

But I can appreciate the technical players. I wish I were a more accurate and fast player so that I can play more legato, staccato techniques and pieces written in presto and prestissimo (oooh, I love talking music theory :D ). But my motor skill are limited. I dig a lot of the guitar shredders and would like to be able to reproduce what they do. It's impressive and some of it sounds great, like parts of AC/DC's Thunderstruck, Eruption by Van Halen, or a lot of stuff played by Dave Mustaine with Megadeth.

I "sort" of agree with your points as well (lol).

However after learning how to play myself I realized that it was much EASIER to learn the techniques of sweeping and tapping and all that stuff that allows fast playing. Not to say I don't respect the players that innovated that style into rock music...but for me it simply got old.

In other words I can "mimic" Ediie van halen (as can many 8 year olds as well) and that type of stuff and speed metal...but has far has the players I put in my top 10 or so...much more difficult IMO. And at least in my personal experience I have seen a ton of players (myself included) that can play SRV licks and songs for example...but it only is the notes...it is not possible to get his true essence, sound or feel.

I think you get my point but regardless it still is just my opinion and I could be wrong, but it would be hard to convince me otherwise.
