zontar: I love the old blues players, too, but they didn't fit into my rock list. But I forgot about George Thorogood and Steve Miller. Now I have to delete two players from my original list to fit them in. Grrr. Or, maybe I'll just expand my list again.

I'm in complete agreement with you about Malcolm Young. As mainly a rhythm player myself, I can appreciate his rock solid support role. And he ain't known as "Riffmaker" for nothin'. That's why he's near the top of my personal list.

A hundred is rather steep for this mind to sort out. Especially limited to rock.

'Will pass.

1) There are a bunch of blues and jazz players that should not be on a rock list.
2) Any list of "top-100 rock players" that has Dweezil Zappa and Joe Strummer, and ignores Duane Allman and Thin Lizzy's Scott Gorham should be burned. Sucha list is mortally wounded, and too far gone to ever be fixed...
8)

Okay, I'll give you Scott Gorham cause I like Thin Lizzy -- I'll delete Albert Hammond Jr. I'm afraid I have to draw a personal line at Duane Allman. :P Dweezil is a good guitarist (the rich boy had his dad Frank for lessons, and even EVH), but I don't think I've ever heard a song he's written that I liked, so he didn't make my list.

I'll tell you what Mike, if I made a list it would differ just a little from yours. Thanks for doing all the hard work for me. I might move J. Beck and Gilmour up a little but you pretty much nailed it!! 8) :)

No way I could name a hundred of anything..lol, But here's a few that stand out for me.

Tom Morello (pretty much came up with all the killer riffs that page didn't..and he's a Harvard grad... go figure)

Jimmy Page (took all the cool riffs until rage came along)

SRV (couldn't live without him but I guess he's more blues the rock?)

Robert Cray (yeah I know...blues..but got to mention him)

Johnny Winter (yeah mo better blues lol)

Angus Young (needs no comment)

Steve Vai (face it,,the guy makes a guitar talk and his playing has personality..not just a boring cliche shredder like his peers)

Buckethead (A virtuoso in any style...and he can't even see the neck)

Joe Perry (I know he's not technical or a wizard but his style influenced me to play)

Jimi of course, one of the most influential innovaters in rock history for guitar.

Curt Cobain (single handedly made it cool again to simply play with a band without "conforming" to the glam or electronica junk at the time...we owe him everything for giving us our rock music back...like his music or not)

Steve Vai was also his teacher when Steve played for Frank. Dweezil is very talented, but not a top-100 player.

I agree that Cobain and the boys of Nirvana revived real rock music after the 80s. A lot of us were hungry for real rock music at that time, without all that glam sillyness. Although Metallica was putting out great metal rock music in the 80s before Nirvana came around. But I have to admit that I liked a lot of the electronic keyboard music of the 80s, especially the British moody stuff by bands like Depeche Mode and OMD. I really hated the glam poseurs and their coke-induced "metal." I lived in Hollywood at that time and I couldn't get away from that crap ... the teased hair, the goofy makeup, the pouty-lipped pretty boy poses ... it actually pissed me off. Even the "we live to party" lyrics drove me nuts. In my humble opinion, most of the music was trash. Still, it was popular and the groupies really dug those dudes.

Agree as well. Actually I like plenty of 80s music... Depeche Mode and dozens of others..but this post was about our fav rock guitarists. And Curt is my one of my favs and did virtually crush the industries interest in signing any more poser bands.

As well I give GnR a lot of credit for putting the "grit" back in our Rock Music..but axel is horrible and I am not a big fan..lol
