If you mean "Should Fender try to compete with Shecter, Ibanez, and Jackson (aka itself), and make a guitar that has a fast, thin neck, and a locking tremelo, with a sharper, hipper, edgier look....."

I'm going to have to say "No".

Here's why:

Fender has already tried this a couple of times (the Heavy Metal Strat, Heartfield Talon <made in the same factory that builds for Ibanez> ) and they weren't particularly successful. The guitars were great, I owned an HM Strat for a couple of years. The thing is, there are already lots of good "metal guitars" out there (and it's not really what Fender is known for). It's just not a profitable endeavor for the Fender label. Squier has done some "metal guitars" too if I remember correctly.
Since Fender owns Jackson and Charvel why not buy one of their "metal guitars".

Is it the "look" of a metal guitar that appeals to you? I play metal on my '06 HSS MIA Strat all the time. I put a DiMarzio Tone Zone at the bridge and DiMarzio Pro Tracks in the neck and middle postitions. The thing rips. If it's just the cosmetics of a "metal guitar" that you want . . . .

Ok here is my $0.02. I think that there should be more models made for the Metal scene. I would even like to see a stock Fender Stratocaster with HSH or HHH pick up configurations. More models than just 2 with a double locking tremelo systems. Of course we can modify our guitars however we want.

Don't get me wrong, I love My HWY 1 SSS just the way it is, it's very versatile. But 15-20 years ago when I played metal exclusively, to order a Fender Stratocaster the way I wanted it configured, it would have cost me $1500 to have one built (and that was a lot of money then). Since then my musical style has evolved to incorporate Blues and Classic Rock into what I play. And if I want to all out thrash, well that's why I kept my ESP LTD HH with the Floyd Rose Tremelo when I bought my HWY 1.

Go on Ebay and search double fat strat. You should get a bunch of returns for HH Strats. The Big Apple Strat was HH too.

Fender has made acquisitions to fill out its product line. And Metal doesn't sell like it used to.

It doesn't appear so.
