ok,here's my plan

Buy a Squier Afinnity Strat
replace the bridge and neck pickups with Dimarzios, cuz i know im gonna play way more metal than anything.

I'd be spending more on the pickups than on the guitar, so I would like a some help making the decision.

IMO, "metal" guitars are just so bland sounding. I play my MiM Std. for metal all the time and it does the job more than good. And yes, the pickups are stock. 8)

Fender's "Jackson" line of guitars is mainly part of their "metal-guitar" industry anyway. Along with those and Charvel.

I really don't think they should. They make an HSS model, but otherwise, they're not know for metal guitars. There are so many brands that specialize in that that Fender probably wouldn't get much business. I think it's best they stick to what the do best.

Modding squiers is usually a decent idea, but if you want something more metal suited, why not just look into something like an ibanez for the same price which is already ready for metal playing and it will have a better suited neck shape.

I voted no. Maybe ok in the Squire line but not the regular Fender line. I believe they tried something like this before and it didnt do well.

I wouldn't care either way--I know guitars attempted for this previously, such as the Katana, basically bombed--although they do have those who love them.

What I'm not happy about is when a company that made good guitars otherwise switches their whole line (or most of it) to metal guitars. And then there's the whole issue of what is a metal guitar?

I have an Iceman--and many consider it a metal guitar only--but while it's great for playing metal it is versatile for many other genres. (I have played metal on it. But I've also played metal on my Mustang as well.)

That's the way I see it. Fender already does make metal guitars. They just don't have the Fender logo on em. Why change an iconic line of guitars when you already own a line that does the same thing?

Don't change the pickups. Try effects or amps first... They change the sound a lot

I voted yes... but then realized "oh, wait that's what Jackson's are for".

*Edit; But then, if they made a strat or somethin' with the HSH config. and put a good trem on it, it would be pretty sweet. Dusted black/grey paint... yup. Also, many of you are saying metal guitars are only good for metal... not true. They are great for jazz.*

Yeah, I like metal. Mostly for the guitar tones and the playing abilities of a lot of the guitarists.

Adrian Smith, Dave Murray, and Jannick Gers never waited for Fender to make metal guitars...To me its the player that makes a guitar a "metal" instrument...Think about it, Hendrix and Yngwie both play, or played in Hendrix's case, Fender Strats through Marshall stacks, but yet one is considered rock and the other metal...if you know what you want, don't wait for Fender to make it, do it yourself. I only recommend that you save a few extra dollars for the Squier Standard Series which IMO is a better modding platform.

I don't play much Metal, but I guess I don"t see anything wrong with Fender making a Strat specifically designed and and advertised as a Metal guitar. It might bring in a whole new group of Strat devotee's.

The guitars are fine.

The question should be whether they should make AMPLIFIERS more suited for metal. Pair up the Fender Guitar with the Fender Heavy Metal Amp and you would have, well, heavy metal!

i'd love it if fender made a type of strat with double humbuckers and a single coil in the middle.

that'd be great for me

the heavy metal strats and more so hm tele's were awesome guitars. Aside from them two its a jackson or nothing for metal. I think they are the rulers in that field. All good metal guitars sound bland for anything else though.

Good Question. I assume there is a market..however Harley Davidson attempted something similar when it introduced the "Vrod"..kinda a dud.

Not unlike Harleys, Fender has it's "niche" or heritage..which is classic/vintage styling and sound.

On the topic my guitarist has started getting into metal more and bought a "Scmector/shecdur/shuckder" or something like that which is more "geared" for metal. However, clean it sounds like donkey.

So what I did is took one of his Fenders, put a hot humbucker in the bridge position...took off the hidious monster gauge strings for a set of 10's (we play 1/2 step down and drop c# so 10's are small enough)..lowered the action/set it up for speed and guess what?....he got rid of the SchmeKal/Sphecpetor whatever you call it. The Fender rocks the metal fine and still sounds good clean as well.
