Looking for some assistance here.

I have several original songs I have recorded and they were created on a Tascam Porta Studio 414 Analog (Tape) Machine.

Does anyone know of a way to get these converted to digital format so I can post them to the internet?

I've been told "no" in the past and then I wondered, how did all the classics that were recorded on reel to reel tape get converted to CD?

Anyone have any ideas how I might do this?

It's cassette. Thanks for what you found but... I work on a MAC, not PC and this piece of gear is not MAC compatible.

Yeah, there's a device that converts analog audio to digital audio. It's called an "A/D convertor," and guess where you'll find some of them? In your Mac.

Connect the "Line Out" jacks on your cassette multitrack to the "Audio In" jack on your Mac.

Boot recording software. Hit "Record."

Turn to your cassette multitrack. Hit "Play." Mix.

You're done. You need recording software? Google this phrase; "free Mac OS X recording software." You have a Mac with no "Audio In" jacks? Try this:

What kind of special idiot did you ask that told you "no, you can't do that?"

If you have Nero CD buring software ver 5 and above, there is a program already included named Nero Wave Editor http://www.uwm.edu/IMT/Info/nero/nerowaveeditor.pdf.

If not, you can download and use the free Audicty wave editor & recorder http://audacity.sourceforge.net/.

With Nero you simply plug a Y connecter that has a 1/8" mini stereo on one end (to your computer's soundcard-in) and the other end has two male RCA, these plug into the Tascam's Left & Right Line-Out.

After pulling up the software and having the recorder connected to your computer. You 'press' the record button in the software interface, adjust the input levels so that the level stays in the yellow-green area.

Be aware that Wav files can be pretty big, around 45 - 50 MB, depends on the lenght of the song. After recording (you press stop), you can EQ, fade, etc using the Wave Editor's toolbox. Than you convert the file to MP3, which most sites only accept, name and save.

Audcity works that same way, except that must download and install the Lame MP3 plug-in, you also must convert the Wave file to Mp3. I'm writing from memory, but I'm pretty sure about the steps.

I used to record my demos on a Fostex X-10 , 4 track cassette recorder back in '95, and made CDs from the recorder.

Excellent! That special idiot obviously did not know what they were talking about, or had no idea. Thanks for the tip.

Run a cord from headphone out to computer, using audacity (see tutorial below), then export as MP3. It very easy and you can tweak the volume, compression, EQ, etc with Audacity (free download).

What type of Mac? Does it have Garageband? If so then GravityJim has told you how to do it. Of course you can make it much more complex if you want to

It's the newest brand of iMAC with MAC OS X, and it has Garageband software. I am reviewing the info that GravityJim sent along with reviews from other folks who bought the product.

A big thanks to all of you who replied and pointed me in the right direction.

I think you may need an interface? You can get a decent one cheap. My Mac mini does not have a audio input, maybe the iMac is different.
