I received my first gig invitation earlier this week. I was asked to start practicing and sitting in with a band. I will keep you guys posted. The band plays mostly blues and classic rock. The only thing I am iffy on is that all band members besides myself are 40+ and I am 24... Any who, Thought I would let my extended family know...

Way cool, one thing though, them being older means they've already (probably) settled down. If the band ever gets locally "huge", they might decide to not risk going bigger, and record companies know they don't have as much time to be big and on the radio. It's still definetly possible, though (if, even you were planning on going to big with them).
But hey, great news, thanks for sharing!

I doubt that guys playing blues and classic rock covers are thinking about getting signed. Most bands that are hoping to break into the music industry are most likely writing and performing original music.

As someone who is 40+ I am always concerned about having younger players in a band because young guys are very frequently undependable and a lot of times, because of limited life experience, they lack a real "feel" for playing blues based music. But they do have energy and imagination so I usually take a chance. If these older guys have been gigging a while it might be an excellent opportunity for you to gain some experience with seasoned players in front of live audiences. Don't let age differences (younger or older) decide your musical affiliations. If you respect the player, no matter what his age, then have fun and jam. I would play with BB King in a second and he is about 40 years older than me. ;) I'm currently jamming with guys in their 60s and they are teaching me a lot about playing music from the 60s because they were gigging back then.

That's good news man. Playing regular gigs with these guys will only help you in the long run. Some of us older guys can sometimes teach a younger man something and visa versa!! Good luck and have fun! :)

My grandson was teaching me some new stuff the other day! 8)

Age in real years isn't as important as age in mental years.

Spoken like a true 40+ player anyway. If you're all on the same page musically over the style and type of music, than you should all learn a little something from each other and have fun.

If a 24 year old keyboard player wanted to join us, I'd be game.

BTW, anyone on here know any key players in Central WI?

So true. A 30 or 40 year old child is no fun to be in a band with. Too much diaper changing and drool wiping. Unfortunately I've played with a few of them.

I've played with a few of them as well. They're usually the ones too that need a ride to every practice/gig, and endlessly borrow picks/strings/cords/a beer whatever.

I've been known to borrow a beer or two, it happens... :D

Sure, we all do, the key word to that was "endlessly" borrow and never return.

Good luck at the gig and learn what you can from the older players (unless you are better then them, lol). The way I got my start (well first stage experience) was sitting in with older musicians and now I worked my way up to an all original rock band on the verge (we hope) of getting a deal.

We all gotta start somewhere. Stage experience is stage experience.
