We recently ran a thread in which we discussed unfulfilled dreams of success in the music business and the capriciousness of success therein.

I ask you to reflect on the guitar heroes we often cite in these pages: Eric, Stevie, Buddy, Jimi, EVH, and the lot.

Then I offer you the tragedies of Danny Gatton. I am of the opinion that were Eric, Stevie, Buddy, Jimi, and EVH sitting stage front during a Danny Gatton concert they would find themselves nothing but dumbstruck with awe.

In the world of guitar heroes, Danny (and Roy Buchanan) were guitarists' guitarists, guys who people went to see just to find out 'how'.

We need to remember them, and how shallow their fame and success, when we think of our own failings.

After Danny, other than for just the pure love of music, sometimes I wonder why we bother at all.

Doc

This clip always amazes me, especially from about the 2:30 minute mark....

I remember the first time I heard Danny Gatton on the radio. I was sitting in the drive through teller lane at my bank when the Gatton/Delbert McClinton collaboration Sun Medley came on. It blew me away so much that I took some of the cash I got directly to Tower Records and bought the Cruisin' Deuces album. I was a fan for life after one listen and I wish Danny was still with us. What a talent!
