OKay... in order to solve the myth about hendrix playing hey joe or purple haze, you need a tonal side by side comparison. FOr those rich people who have both, try the intro of hey joe on a tele then compare it to a strat, and then compare to recording. Though i don't have a tele, i am thinking that it really does sound like a telecaster. Hey joe doesn't have that typical strat treble, it has a deep midrange found on teles. Not sure about purple haze, cause there is just SO MUCH FUZZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Teles do give a warmer distortion, so that may help. I have never seen a post where anyone actually said that hey compared the two, so try it.

"Hey Joe" was played on a Tele? I believe that's a minority opinion.

I checked out the transcription of "Hey Joe" done by none other than the famous Andy Aledort in the June 1990 issue of Guitar for the Practicing Musician magazine. I think Andy compared the sounds.

Andy says in his performance notes: "It's definitely a Strat through a Marshall, as is the rhythm guitar, and the tone of the lead guitar is warmer and rounder than the rhythm guitar."

Here's a Hendrix quote: "The Stratocaster is the best all-round guitar for the stuff we're doing. You can get the very bright trebles and the deep bass sound. I tried Telecaster and it only has two sounds, good and bad, and a very weak tone variation." So he wasn't 100% negative towards the Tele, but the Strat was it for him, obviously.

To avoid the Strat bright sound, try the neck pickup.

EXACTLY. He liked (loved) strats, and he'd use one for hey joe or purple haze, HAD he obtained a usable strat. His were damaged, and Noel Redding lended him the tele. Though this is controversial, i repeat my final statement: try it for yourself, don't just take something from a guitar magazine and accept it as facts written in stone. LIke science, you should try it for yourself.

That story has way too many variants to know which, if any, are true. And I've never seen it reported in a reliable source.

As for "trying it," I have found the amp settings to make my Tele sound Strat-like (at least to my ears). Over the years, I have done small gigs with just my Tele and still played our entire mostly-Strat-based repertoire (Hendrix, Trower, SRV). Going the other way, I did some recordings using a 1964 Strat that fooled a very experienced guitar player/collector into thinking that I used a Tele on some songs! To me, there are classic "Fender sounds" that you can get out of any Fender guitar with single coils (Strat, Tele, Jag, Mustang, DuoSonic), so if a legitimate source told me that Hendrix did this-or-that song on a Tele, I would just shrug my shoulders and say "Okay."

I would like to read what others have to say on the topic.

Not so off topic: does anyone know what guitar Noel brought with him to what he thought was an audition for the New Animals?

I found the story! Sort of. No way was it "Hey Joe" though.

Here's what's in Noel's own book. He tells us that he traded his Tele to Trevor Williams for a "Gibson two-pick-up" which he used as part payment for his Jazz Bass in February 7. Noel may not have owned the Tele when Hey Joe or Purple Haze were recorded (October 23, 1966 & January 11, 1967, respectively).

But I found this story in the book: He talks about a gig on February 1, 1967 where Jimi's amp blew up and they had to play through the PA. Then he says: "A couple nights later, Jimi broke his guitar and I had to borrow my old Telecaster from Trevor Williams."

No other specifics are given about dates or what the Tele was used for. The implication is that the Tele was for Jimi to use, but for gigs or recording? Or both? So there could be pictures of Jimi using a Tele at a show.

I'll give more results on my research tomorrow as it's about sign-off time now.

Hendrix was definately a Strat guy. I don't think I've read anywhere that he actually recorded anything using a Tele.
