Well we have plenty of those type places here in LA. They are called "rehersal studios".

Sarcasm aside, the problem with those (other then having to pay) is the equipment is usually beat to death. Some people just don't respect stuff..sad.

But regardless, I should be able to practice at home at low/moderate volume levels without a swat team paying a visit.

theres a couple of practice studios here in tucson too. very expensive ,dirty, impractical ,poorly constructed ,and not welcoming to the general music learning commuity. this idea is geared more to attract people find it boring to jst practice at home alone .people love a since of like minded community .most the kids i see hang out in music stores driving the staff crazy .they need an invironment that will incourage them to play .obviously they are very successful in LA and i think that most towns i america need places like this if anything just to keep nieghors from killing each other .how can you enjoy your art if it annoyes everyone around you

I can remember, back in the early 80's playing the U.S army bases in Germany. I am a Brit but I was with an American band and a German at that time. Anyway I can recall we took time out occasionally to use the facilities, i.e. rehearsal rooms and very good they were too, half a dozen or so rooms, they even had gear you could use. The guitars weren't very good but for the guys that haven't got anything, hey what the hell, come on.We could take our own gear in anyway. I suppose what I'm trying to say here is that. The building was in it's own grounds away from anything else, you could let it go as much as you wanted. So if enough guys in your community got together and took an idea like this to your authorities, well perhaps, maybe. I recall when I was a kid we all used rooms in the local youth club. There is a way around anything, we just need to look. Peace to you all.

Here in Pittsburgh, we have a group called the Western Pennsyvania Musicians Group tha provides (at a VERY reasonable price) a practice studio. Go to http://www.wpmg.us to check it out. It is used primarily for young musicians, most of whom still live with mom & dad, so it allows the groups to crank it up.
Ralph is very strict about alcohol and drugs, so the moms and dads are happy to get junior's guitar out of the house.
