I was at the music store the other day...had a blast by the way!!! I got to play a Joe Stummer tele amung other amazing guitars! Fender is certainly beyond doubt, my favorite (of course)!! Anyway, onto my story...on my way out this guy was talking to us and saying how he can barely have his guitar plugged in without neighbors bugging him that it's "too loud" when really it's their hearing aids that are up to high...he said he's just must be interfeering with their eves dropping! lol I can relate very much to his delema in some ways, as my sister doesn't even like it when I play with NO amp AND with my door shut, let alone with the amp on even a little. Apperently it's "too loud." Am I not entitled to the right to have fun? Anyone else have this problem, or do I stand alone? Sorry, I just had to vent......

I have a fantastic older widowed lady next door to me. My music room is on her side of the house, where she has her computer room. She says that she enjoys hearing me play/practice and that it never bothers her. Now my wife, on the other hand, goes nuts when I practice the same thing over and over. BTW I just got a drum set last weekend so we'll see if things change.

I hear about it when I use my AC30 or the Budda sometimes because they sound best at a higher volume. Most times I use a Cube 30x and I will keep it down or use the squeezer on it which is a nice feature.

Hm...the neighbors I live around don't put up a fuss or anything. Me and my friend got out with our amps and my guitar/his bass and played along with an MP3"Joker and the Thief" by Wolfmother at a somewhat louder volume and nobody put up a fuss. We played it a few times to boot, too.

Other than that, I usually only turn on the amp when nobody is home, or when I'm actually motivated enough to drag out the wires and cables to hook up the thing (I've got a bit of a lazy streak...especially since I have to pack it up every few days). If I DO turn it on when people are home, my earbuds are usually in my ears and hooked to the amp.

The benefits of living in a small town: My old neighbor was over 100 years old and couldn't hear me, the others were too far away to notice. I just plugged her in and played as loud as I wanted. I couldn't do that in college, though as I only had my acoustic.

Same as jeffo...I live in a condo, only I'm the upstairs guy. I play a lot through my amp, but I'm always conscious of the volume, and I use headphones between 9 pm and 9 am should the muse speak to me during that time. I usually check with the neighbors once a week or so to see if I'm annoying them, because with our condo rules, complaints against you = $$.

Oh, and it's not just the fear of being fined. I'm a nice guy, too. Image

WHAT?! Pay a fine for disturbing someone else while living in a glorified apartment you own? Not me. If I'm buying I've got my own rules up to a point. Sure I'd be considerate of others all around me but a fine? Take it out of my "rent".

Now to the topic of conversation-if I fire up my amp or even my son's amp to where the volume is barely audible my wife and sometimes my youngest daughter will hollar to turn that loud thing down! All the while my girl is playing her flute ten times as loud as one of the amps.

i play through a 65w fender solid state amp.
i play at 2 because 1 is off.
at least once a week my sister will come into my room and demand i turn it down. she still doesn't understand that underneath 2 is nothing.
my dad on the other hand will tell me that he can't tell if he's listening to my computer blaring or me playing.

I don't Know whether my neibours are complaining or not.

I can never hear what they're saying.

Neighours on 2 sides play loud music late into the night quite often.
So I don't really care if they can hear me :)

And if someone does complain I just go out and run the weed whacker for a half hour or so around the yard, that 2stroke is so loud everyone goes inside to hide. :P.

Guess I'm getting too old to care if I bother anyone anymore.
Although in the next house we build I hope to make a sound proof practice/recording room, so the sounds of others won't annoy ME :!:

I was in a music store yesterday with my son. We both love it there. There was a guy trying out some kind of mega amp, (I don't know what kind). He had some major chops and was playing quite loud - for in a store - when his buddy said, "Do you want to try it in a soundproof room and crank it?' The player with the tats and major piercings looked my way, (I'm definitely old enough to be his father), and I said, "You've got to crank it!) He smiled and the next thing I heard was the muted sound of heavy metal Pounding out of a soundproof room - well, sort of soundproof. Not my style at all but the guy made it sound great and I was glad to have our love of music bridge the gap once again.

Luckily for me no matter where I've lived whether it was college or different places after that, people would actually stand outside to listen or just come right in. Even if they didn't like metal or classical, they at least appreciated the technicality involved with what I was playing. If someone is bitchin' about how loud you're playing, then just turn it up and pretend that you can't hear them. As far as getting fined goes...everywhere in the US has a certain decibel level that's considered "offensive" after a certain time of the day and I highly doubt that anyone here is pushing that envelope enough to get into trouble unless you've got a high powered half-stack in the middle of your yard  .

Glad you posted this topic because I need to vent about that.

My situation is I live in an apt building in LA with my guitarist, the singer who also plays guitar, and myself, the bassist and I also play and write on guitar.

The other night I was playing the acoustic working on a verse and the guitarist was soloing on an electric with the volume extremely low. After an hour or so we hear someone pounding in the door. It was the building manager. Apparently someone must have complained..some no life loser.
Anyhow we were repremanded and was told there would be some kind of notice on our door. We felt like little kids getting disiplined by our parents..what a joke. We were NOT loud at all.

I doubt we are lucky enough that they would or even could legally evict us for this "offense" but either way it is not a comfortable environment for us..I'd love to move if it wasn't for the lease we just signed.

What I did was right after the manager left I went out on the balcony and yelled "ok..who is the coward that snitched on us like that, all you had to do was ask us to quiet down" Makes me sick but felt good to vent here..thanks for listening.
