I'm practically a knuckledragger and I play mine with the bridge at the same level with my belt buckle or slightly lower. I use my thumb a lot so my wrist is usually in a comfortable position there. But I've never been comfortable playing higher or lower than this unless I'm sitting down.

Doc :?

Now that does suprise me Doc. The one band of the last 30 years to specialize on 50's/60's era melodies and their attention to songcraft. O.k a lot of their stuff i can see you not liking but there must be one track that grabs you.
Personaly i dont think they got the recognition they deserved. The bit they did get was mostly posthumous. Just think of all the bands that never would of been without em.

I just can't play my guitar way down low, I have mine waist high it's about the most comfortable position and even then I swing the neck upwards to hit some notes. I suppose it's what you get used too.

I read somewhere that Jimmy Page couldn't play an F major barre chord at the first fret with his guitar hanging so low. Mind you, it didn't seem to do his career any harm...

Hahaha! Yes, that's a heavy guitar...

Actually, in all seriousness, I believe he developed major lower spine problems later on. Looking at his posture in The Song Remains The Same - I'm not too surprised!

Cheers - C

I adjust my strap to where it's comfortable, which happens to be pretty low for my Gibson Nighthawk, and medium high for my Strats. I sit with my Acoustics. I hate wearing an acoustic guitar, I gotta sit down with 'em

I've never known any guitar player who got famous for looking cool! It all boils down to how you play and how much passion and attitude you have! So if you play better with your strap low....go for it, but if you play better with your guitar at your waist then by all means do it...sounding good alway trumps looking cool!

High, low, where every you wanna go. Every generation has its stage 'shtick'. In the '60's some of the English guys had them up under their arm pits.

Then there's headbanging, and running all over the stage like you have ants in your pants, for effect.

Waist high is what the off-set body contours of the Stratocaster and its successors the Jazzmaster and Jaguar were built for. From ergonomics , you are most functional and efficient with your forearm at ninety degrees to your upper arm (radius and ulna to humerus). You can maintain a relaxed wrist position from there as well.

If whacking the floor with you fist is your thing, by all mean, knock yourself out. To me, its all circus and performance and nothing to do with virtuosity and technique.

Doc

This says it all! Bravo, Doc!!

I think it depends on your own physiological make-up. Long arms vs. short arms, long torso vs. short torso, etc...

Personally I like my bass to be in the vicinity of my waist. To high...I would have to bend my fretting hand at to much of an angle for the first position, and to low would make the same effect hold true for the middle to upper portions of the neck.

Basically do whatever is efficient, comfortable, & safe.

If you look cool in a photograph, but can't perform anymore, that would be a real drag.

P.S. Bending your wrist at a sharp angle is never a good idea.

I'm only a 5'3" girl with short arms and long but tiny fingers. So I don't have much of a choice! I need to play fairly high, but not so high that it looks nerdy. It's fine with me. I have a hell of a time playing barre chords if it's too low.

I'm a shaved ape. Legs of a bassethound and arms like Mr Tickle. I keep mine at just below bellybutton, so that the top scoop is on what martial atrists know as the dan tien. Its nice to feel the resonance at your center.
