I was interested in the Gibson ES 335. Seemed like a good fit for my style of playing. Then I saw what they cost. I think I'll stick with my Strat and Variax.

I don't think any guitar, other than a true custom, is worth the kind of money Gibson is asking.

:D yes.

Gibsons Epiphone versions of their guitars are not too bad, and a lot cheaper.
They might benefit from a PUP replacement though.

I know this is not a pur hollow body like an ES335. If I had the coin swimming around in sofa cushions this is the next git I'd buy...

There are several companies that make a decent hollowbody/335 type of guitar.

Look around for used too.

I've got an Epi Dot. Put new pups in and it's just fine and it didn't break the bank. Plays great and now I've got that 335 vibe on the cheap.

Can you recommend a particular model? There seem to be a gazillion different configurations available? I probably don't want to go with the least expensive one, just from bad experiences doing that in the past.

Gibson and PRS both kind of over-price their products. Fender makes top-of-the-line gear and personally, I think they all play better, sound better, and are more durable than a Gibson or PRS. The foreign-made PRS guitars are even expensive!

Though Epiphone makes some decent guitars, like the Les Paul Std. for like $500. Great guitar! I own one. Built with the same woods as a Gibson too...the pickups are just different. Some difference right?

Other than that though, I say Fender forever man! :D

You can get a Takai 335 for like 1100 if you look around. that is what I was going to buy my Son but we went ahead with the used gibby which set me back more. The Toka'si are very nice though.

Expensive things are never worth it if price is an issue. If you can afford it, get it. You can always look for used.

I have to respectfully disagree with the PRS comments. Their offshore line aren't that expensive. Most can be gotten in the $4-500 range, and quality wise, they're ahead of most of the competition in that price range. As far as the American models, comparing any Fender model to a PRS is apples vs oranges. I have 4 American made PRS guitars and one SE model, all of which are well worth the money IMHO.

Having said that, what guitar each of us chooses to use is a highly personal choice and does not open us to criticism for making that choice.

I have an Ibanez Artcore AG75TBS (translucent blue sunburst), and a Peavey JF2 EX (gold sparkle) that do what I need 'em to, in the way of a hollow body electric (the Ibanez) and a semi-hollow body electric (the Peavey). No need for me to go for any of the Gibson offerings...unless I happen to hit big on PowerBall. :P I do have a couple of Gibsons, however - Les Paul Faded Double Cut, and Les Paul Melody Maker.

Ibanez AS-73 looks like a 335 for about $350 or less. I own one and it plays and sounds great
