Damn, just checked the storm track for Ike and it's heading for Louisiana. I wonder how many of these they can handle in a short time?

I know you're sympathies are with them, but I also know where you live, having family within missle range of you. Winter's coming, and some of those 90-100 mph winter storms are nothing to sneeze at.

More over....I was in Seattle the week after your momentus 6 inch snowfall. Tall about being prepared! You guys fell on your keisters. In NYC We eat those for breakfast and make it to work on time, and you know that personally. I can imagine what was going on high in the hills north of Seattle Center or coming east from the ferry terminal towards I-5. I've been up those hills on a good day. Zounds...imagine San Francisco in a blizzard.

How pitifully small we are in the face of all of this. As scripture asks: "What is man that Thou art mindful of him?"

I remember the big wind storm of '91. Paralyzed the area for a week. I own a big generator now. Good snow storms it's the same. It snows like crazy when the arctic front hits. Then the cold settles in and the roads become a sheet of ice an inch or two thick. Totally impossible to drive on.

I also remember the last 6.9 earthquake, that was a doozy. One of these days the Alaskan Way Viaduct is gonna collapse Oakland style while the politicians drag their feet on what to do with that dangerous road.

Unfortunately we all love to live in beautiful areas and what makes an area beautiful is an unusual landscape which is caused by repeated natural disasters. For us the big ones are earthquakes, volcano's and wind. Oh and your right, the hundreds of nuclear warheads aimed at all our military bases.

Glad to hear that you're OK, and we're praying for Ike to fizzle out before it gets there.

Hanna came through here earlier today. She basically just blew things around a bit and rained on us some. But we needed the rain, and there was no damage that I know of, so all's well.

I bought a generator after Isabel came through here and we were without power for a week. I gassed it up on Thursday and made sure that everything was in working order. Thankfully, it wasn't needed this time around.

One of the things I'll likely be participating in when I retire to Palm Beach County is disaster preparedness. There's presently an organization in NYC which all health care professionals can join. It cordinates and manages mass disaster preparedness and implementation. Since 9/11, this has been perceived as a must, and has come to realization. I have been solicited to join but other present obligations have made it impossible.

The generator thing will be investigated sometime this year as part of my review of the infrastructure of that house. I didn't plan for it up north when I built this 12 years ago, but Florida lays in the eye of the tiger.

Doc

WE had some serious damage, I don't know if the nation knows but over 2 million houses without power(and some water) but a lot of several hundred year old oak trees on top of houses. I appreciate your thoughts and hope no one else gets hurt by the storms coming. At least Ike does not have the energy that Tina(Turner) had. We'll just wait and see. Chet only has to worry about camp fires and earthquakes

If you don't have a generater you should get one asap. I stood in pouring rain for 4 hours to buy one and it's the best purchase I've ever made.
I'm retired and I want to do something along the same line!!

For the benefit of the rest, Alaska Way is an elevated highway that runs north south on the west side of center city, close enough to the shore of Puget Sound to bat a ball. Beneath it lies the right of way of the railroad, I estimate four sets of tracks, if my memory serves me correctly. Just westerly, outside the shadow of the highway are two lanes north, two lanes south of local traffic feeding the waterfront, and the ferry terminal in particular. Set in this magical surrounding are the football and baseball stadiums. I have had the pleasure of coming off the ferry from Bainbridge Island and attempting to negotiate my way across town at precisely the same time the baseball stadium spilled its guts across the streets, which, by the way, they close for that purpose. Close , a major east-west artery.

Now the movie script for all of this, much like the footage from Candlestick Park during the big one, calls for the Cascadia Fault to break at 5:30 in the afternoon on a weekday, causing a 7.8'r along with the tsunami which will definitely follow.

That's about what CS was talking about as far as preparedness in Seattle.

Doc

We have a little 2000watt generator like to have one bigger but I bought this for just to run the fridge and communications stuff. Went with out electric a few years ago for 8 days thats when we bought it. You never no when you need it that time we had a bunch of trees go down near our place could not even get our car or truck out for almost 3 days because of them.

I've just checked the active weather map. It's likely this storm will be out of here in about 2-3 hours. It is just about coming into Miami Mike's neck of the woods. We haven't heard much from him today but I expect he is likely chill'in.

We're reaching the end of our rope here tonight so I will wish you well and those who may be or already have been in harm's way....God Speed.

Doc

Ike looks like it could get bad with the way they are talking on the weather channel. They were talking about evacuating the Keys and possibly Miami as well. Looks like Tuesday it will hit.

Down here in South Florida, we're all watching Ike. A few days ago NOAA had it tracking into my front yard, but with each successive advisory they have it tracking farther south. Two days ago it was headed directly for Key West. Now the forecast has it moving along the southern coast of Cuba.

It's still 3 days away. Hoping to dodge another bullet.

Steve, you said it...we are also here (Coral Springs, and it had me sweating...

As Doc mentioned, I've been chillin' and I'm also out of harm's way in the New England area now. Thanks for your thoughts and best wishes to those who are lookin' at the storms approaching. Be safe!

I'm on the barrier island in Hallandale Beach . . . exactly where Katrina first made landfall.

Once I get myself organized down in Boca, and have some idea of what my time frames are down there, it would be nice to starting talking about setting up something we used to do about 20 years ago when CB radios were a very popular form of communicating during daily commutes.

We called them "eyeballs". It was a monthly gathering, at a local 'watering hole' for an evening shooting the breeze. These could even evolve into monthy 'jams' and who know what else.

There used to be an operation in lower Manhattan called "The Off-Wall Street Jam.'' It was a rehearsal hall operation that brought together musician-hobbyists of all stripe and the used to have a monthly "jam'' evening of entertainment in a club up the street and member bands would sign up to peform.

This could be an interesting expansion of the Forums activities, local, state regional, and who knows, perhaps a national or international contest...what we used to call 'band wars' back in the '50's.

(Now just watch Brad go dashing into the front office with this 'aha' and Fender copyright the term.)

Let's kick it around, dudes.
