i was just wondering why some famous guitarists start playing with a fender as teens & a little older & then when they become more famous they move to gibson.
Is the profits, the quality or just the "image" they try to promote ?

Some people have more money, then they buy what they couldn't afford before. Some, actually get it free from the guitar company to promote their product. Yeah, when they finally can afford it, they get it for free... :)

So was Pete Townshend. He was notoriuos with his numbered Gibson Les Pauls, and let's not forget all the SGs. But since the 1980s it has been almost all Strats and Telecasters.

And some play both (and sometimes, more nameplates) as mature, successful musicians.

Clapton went Fender, gibson, Fender.

I think its down to sponsorship more than anything. when your skint you want gear that covers a broad spectrum of styles. When your rich you just have what you want or are given.

Remember....One of Eric's heroes was Freddy King, hence the LP. But you will see early Yardbirds video of Eric with a Telecaster.

These days image is Everything. A beginer/intermediate might get a Fender because of the money then get a LP studio or something (when he gets into a band) to say "That's right, I use Gibson" because every kid these days knows who Gibson is because of Guitar Hero.

But me, I'd rather use my tele 'till it busts terribly and a Behringer (or whatever else wannabe's don't know about) 'till it craps out.

Though I don't follow current bands closely what I seem to see is a great popularity in the use of the Telecaster and the LP. The Strats do not seem to be of interest to the current crop of 'strummers'. I use this term because there does seem a paucity of single string artistry, and the kind of creative soloing we have seen in the past.

I personally own representative examples of three of what I consider to be the traditional leading builders namely, Fender, Gibson, and PRS, and each of these lovely instruments has its own style, and voice.

Doc

Who are these Famous Guitarists? The only one I can think of is Frank Marino (Mahogany Rush)!

Guys who went from "mainly Gibsons" early in their career to "mostly Fender" later were: Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Ritchie Blackmore, Pete Townshend

Even Jimmie Page used Strats at the end of Zeppelin.

Interesting observation. I too prefer Stratocasters, My '58 was my first serious guitar. However, I own an LP Class5 Quilttop. Set an amp up and swap guitars in and out of the same channel and the only Strats to stand up to the LP's power are my Claptons at full midboost. This is why the Clapton guitar was created. Eric wanted the best of both. I will not argue that there is more versatility with the Stratocaster in terms of tonal colorations but people choose the LP for specific duties and it is not unusual for an artist to choose a specifice instrument for a particular application. Reviews of recording sessions in guitar magazines support this.
Yet, if I were told that I could take only one guitar with me on 'the never ending journey', it would be my '89 Clapton.

Never Ending Journey? You mean when they wall you up in your pyramid, you want that '89 Clapton in there with you?

No, the mythology suggests that a great boat takes one to the Grey Havens where eternal stadium concerts are given.
All of our past heroes are there, but the difference is that everyone gets in on the jams.

Eternally....a rock star!! 8)
