I usually buy off the rack, seeing as the one in the boxes are usually so horribly out of tune, sticky, and usually requires new pickups. The ones of the rack, when gifted with Fret Buzz, usually get seen to by the workers. Most of the time, it's a guitar they love to play themselves and will gladly do it for free. The Guitars on the rack are also cleaned, polished, loved, restrung, and polished again at the end of each month.

I buy the one on the shelf that I play. You can never know what a guitar is like compared to one you didn't play. I'd prefer that if a guitar I played was great sounding, I'd get that one. You never know if the others are duds and simply wasting your money.

I would NEVER order one. I won't even consider buying a new guitar unless I get to try out the guitar on at least 3 or 4 different amps and compare it to my current weapon-of-choice.

Just my preference though.

Off the stores racks,
I want the one that caught my eye, and I had a chance to try out for a while.
No factory pre-packaged surprises to open when you get home.

I've always bought out of a box. Both guitars and amps. And I've had excellent luck. I've seen many guitars on the rack with scratches and other defects, because of everyone picking them up, playing them and doing all kinds of things that make me cringe. Every notice all the teens that always go in there, plug into amps, play for hours, with no intention of buying anything? Kind of......hanging out and now with something to do.

I once went into a guitar center at opening time. Two teens ran full speed into the store, right to a Line 6 Spider amp, that I was seriously thinking of buying. They both sat down next to each other, grab a couple of guitars, and plugged into the Line 6 amp I was hoping to try. Then started to jam with each other. Not trying anything to buy...just jamming, I guess for something to do. I waited for a bit.......then walked out of the store. I've seen this over and over, so I know a lot of rack guitars have been abused from time to time. So......I prefer a virgin guitar out of a box. Like I said, I've always had good luck.

I can see your point, Sye, but I'm in agreement with the others on this. Maybe it's been handled a bit, but I know how the one I picked up off the rack feels in my hands, how the action's set, if I get the "Come to Papa" feeling, etc. One from the back room may not be so user friendly when I get it home.

I have always liked things right out of the box. I almost always have to be the first to open the box on anything. The thing is, though, is I like the professional/ personal touch. For example, my guitar (which I bought off rack) played really, really well, but probably didn't out of the factory.

i agree with syeklops. i buy them out of box. i open the boxes at the store because i dont want surpises at home. i ask them to tune the guitar for me & i go home. i dont want an abused scratched guitar. ironically when i got home i scratched it accidentally myself :( . the same with the amps.

Out of the box. I always ask for the set up as inclusive with the final price. If they need a blue print of the set up, ask them to set it up like the one you just played off the rack.

I've only bought one guitar brand new, it was the Ibanez A/E that I bought after I gave up trying to save for my Montara. And I bought that offline, it came out of the box, I took it to the local luthier for a bone nut and saddle, played like a dream.

Other than that, all of my current equip came to me 2nd, 3rd, or more hand. I mean, since my Musicmaster Bass was found wasting in that barn loft it could be 20th hand

'Done both. Preference is to carefully select, feel / listen if guitar and self are a match, buy.

Then at home, immediately play a bunch, many styles, different amps, settings...wring it out for a serious day or more. Intention is, if we are a fit, keep it (usually send her / him /it out for big-pro setup, soon thereafter).

Have in back of mind, 'will return for refund the next day if we don't have chemistry.

That ain't happened yet.

Both of mine have been out of the box. The local shop takes great care of me and made sure they were exactly what I was expecting and set them up perfectly for me.

The one I play--it's possible for 2 guitars of the same year, male & model to be different & feel different.

Recently I played 4 individual guitars of the same model and found I really preferred one of them and one other didn't impress me. The other 3 did. This went according to the finish--so possibly the finish can affect this guitar.
