I'm thinking of getting a 335 because I think it makes a fine complement to my Fender. Do you have any tips for things to look for when searching for a used one? About how much should I expect to pay for a 335 (not the satin one, but the standard.)? Thanks.

For a used one, I would say make sure there aren't any minor/major damages to the guitar as well as making sure the electronics are in top shape. Making sure the neck is lined up and the tuners and bridge are a good idea too. Standard issue stuff.

Also, make sure the pups are still stock.

Look around for a used 333. Same style of guitar, but there is a plate for control access on the back.

I paid $650 for mine...

...back in 1985. :P

It's spent more time in it's case than out of it though.

I would reccommend a stop tailpiece over a trapeze tailpiece. Players say that if you break a string with the trapeze set-up, it will bring the other strings further out of tune. Take a real good look at the neck, especially in the tuning head-nut area for repaired breaks of the neck. Mahogony is a lot softer than the "rock hard" maple Fender uses and there are many "broke back" Gibsons out there. Your local Guitar Center would probably agree to take a look at the neck under a black light for you if you ask. (This will help detect good work by a real luthier or a repair obsured by a dark finish.)

Ibanez makes some excellent thinlines that are used by pros as well, in case you might be interested.

If you think the body size might be to big for you look for a 339. Same body style just smaller.

I have Gibson CS-336 which is also a smaller version of the 335.

Very nice guitars. I would suggest checking with your local dealers for one used. Somthing like that is a crap shoot on craig's list or somthing like that. I paid 1800 for the one I gave my son for his Birthday from Bill's Music House. I saw some newer custom shop ones 2200 and up while there
that I would have bought for myself if I had the moola.
