Just curious which branch of the Herring family you are from. My grandfather bought a cool book called the Herring book and yup the family name is what it is all about. This branch has been in New Mexico for around 100 years.

Sorry, I'm just a fake herring. Just a nickname I picked up as a kid and it kind of stuck. I'm sure real Herrings are great people! 8)

Anyway, back to guitars. I'm looking for a Swinger or Bronco so if anyone has one for sale / knows someone who has one for sale / sees one for sale please let me know. :)

Maybe they were talking about the kind of fish when they call you that. Are you fish-like?

Bought one from a newspaper classified ad
One from a pawnshop window
One from a friend of a friend
One given to me by my bro

Yup, in the old days, we bought guitars from classified ads in newspapers!

Yep, the gills and scales are a dead giveaway. 8)

I have bought many guitars at local pawn shops. The owner of the guitar wants to unload the guitar usually due to financial trouble. They also pawn the guitars that will net the most money for them, the "good ones" fetch the most $$$. The pawn shop owner just wants to make a reasonable profit from the sale, not neccessarily the market value of the axe.
I have found mint condition, unplayed guitars for less than half of retail. My most recent purchase was a mint 2001 Fender Stratocaster Standard in brown sunburst finish. It plays beautifully, is stock, and has virtually no playing wear that I can find. I paid $175! Not too bad, huh?
I just like being able to hold it in my hands and plug it in. EBAY and Craigslist are not for me.

I know they aren't all this way, but my experience with pawn shops is the cheapies end up for sale in the shop and the good guitars get sold out the back door to friends and favored customers the minute the ticket is out of date. I rarely see a good American or CS strat, if ever, for sale in a pawn shop.

I have to agree. We've got a lot of pawn shops down here and I've never even found a decent guitar.

I've had great luck with eBay -- I picked up an Epi LP Studio Lite in great condition and my Hwy1 Strat that I absolutely love just needed a setup. My biggest score was the Q-Series Jazzmaster in Lake Placid Blue just like the one in the avatar. It arrived in pristine condition . . . well . . . without the whammy bar. But I don't use 'em.
