We all love collecting these lumps of old wood with bits of metal holding everything together, but where's the best place to grab one?

Much as I like to feel a guitar in a shop I understand that they're trying to make max profit at my expense (who can blame them). I always negotiate a better deal but feel sorry for the unknowing falling for the sales patter and getting ripped off.

Online shopping is always a risk but sometimes it works well and you get a decent guitar for a snip. Or you can run into vile shits like music-outlet-shop on ebay (just read their reactions to neg feedback!) who charge double the going rate.

Over to you...

I've had good luck at pawn shops. Not only can you find good deals, but nothing beats taking a day to drive around to all the local shops and check out their gear. Even if you're not in the market for a new guitar, it's still fun.

I used to use my local place here in town, but they ripped me off big time a few weeks ago. So I tried a place in Glasgow, got a great deal on an American Deluxe Telecaster, and a Blues Jnr amp. I wouldn't trust e-bay, I've got to feel and hear a guitar before I buy it. I love the buying experience in a cool guitar store.

Years ago I bought a Godin on ebay. It looked so ugly in the photo that I almost didn't bid. Made an offer, seller accepted and posted it right away.

When it arrived it was beautiful - maple flame top and in mint condition. Once it had been set up properly it played beautifully and I still play it to this day.

'Have not purchased a used one since '82 and it was at a local music store (Ibanez copy of a Thunderbird IV, 'lawsuit' giutar, excellent axe, still use weekly).

'Prefer to wear new ones in personally.

I got both my 2006 Strat, 1996 Epi Les Paul, and my Blues DeVille on ebay as well as my son's 1957 Vintage Hot Rod Strat and his Hot Rod DeVille on ebay Never had any problems there...you just need to check a seller's feedback

Herring,

Just curious which branch of the Herring family you are from. My grandfather bought a cool book called the Herring book and yup the family name is what it is all about. This branch has been in New Mexico for around 100 years. If you don't mind mail me at revherring@yahoo.com

Anyway check the local sale papes (Thrifty Nickel; Quick Quarter etc). Sometimes you can get a lot of gear for almost giveaway prices for people who need the cash for one reason or another. You also tend to find people in those adds tend to be more on the up. People don't like to put stolen stuff in those adds because it is evidence and it takes too long to sell for those just after quick drug money. I have found some great buys and you can't feel as bad for getting an awesome deal because they are the ones that set the price. Helps out those that need it and at the same time helps you out with what you need at the best price. Local newspaper 4Sale section is pretty much the same thing.

Ebay is good but sometimes I have heard of "fake" models and other things but that is with ebay at al not just in the music section. They are still pretty trust worthy and just be sure to check out the sellers info and record. Good luck in finding what your after!

I have also had good luck on Evil-bay with guitars. I had played a Montara at a Guitar Center store and didn't have the $600 for it at the time. I watched Evil-bay and got mine at $250 for the guitar and hard shell case, a great deal I thought. Now with another $100 invested in a new pickup system and luthier set up, it is a dream to play.

Got my Squier Strat off there too for $100, including a case.

I've had good luck, always looked at feedback before purchasing too.

Sorry, I'm just a fake herring. Just a nickname I picked up as a kid and it kind of stuck. I'm sure real Herrings are great people! 8)

Anyway, back to guitars. I'm looking for a Swinger or Bronco so if anyone has one for sale / knows someone who has one for sale / sees one for sale please let me know. :)

I'm over in the States later this year and if the dollar is still weak I'll definitely be on the lookout for a bargain.

I keep forgetting to mention Denmark Street here in London. Known as 'Tin Pan Alley', the whole street (small street) is made up of music shops trading on their address. Ignorant sales assistants, selling junk with huge price tags bearing the name of the street as if it were more important than the shop itself. OK, so it's quite good the first few times you go there, just moving from shop to shop but it soon gets boring seeing the same 'rare' strats in every shop. Having said that, girls can charm themselves to a bargain if you target the right bloke (I once got £100 off just by flirting).

:D
