Hi mates, just to add that the Fender U experience is made even more memorable because every single of you are so down to earth. Real. Cool. Thanks classmates, each and everyone of you! Thank you for the friendship made. Again, kudos to all staff at Fender U - the dream makers, they really do make it all come true. Masterbuilders at Customshop, thank you for the relentless pursuit of perfection - inspiring! Also to all the Professors and Robert Knight, what an inspiration and experience of a lifetime. THANK U!

Hey guys and girls,
Sorry I haven't been to this forum yet, but I was totally unaware it was here.
I read with interest all the posts about the Fender University. I can't believe I was one of the lucky winners of a contest that got me there. After attending the 4 day event, I can say without any reservation that it was, next to my wedding, the greatest experience of my life.
I have regaled many a friend and family member with my adventures and each time the euphoria I originally experienced comes washing back over me.
The greatest people with a common interest shared their passion for a long weekend of music, friends, food, music, sights, sounds and music. I could go on and on, and usually do. My fellow classmates were one and all the nicest people I have ever met. Like Richard said "not and a**hole in the bunch". The performers who were not your atypical "rock stars", but down to earth, warm, great, engaging people (any classmates who haven't yet put on the Cosmosquad CD, do it now and do it LOUD-it's incredible!!). And the staff of Fender, one and all, could not have been better people.
I knew 3 chords on the guitar when I went. With all the inspiration and direction I received I now know 6, and I am practicing every day. That inspiration would be worth the $$ itself.
I love the fact that I was part of this historical event (if you're looking at the pics of the University goings on, in the group picture I'm the tall guy in the very back, brown shirt, safety glasses). I would do this again in a heartbeat.
Love and Peace to all.
Mike

In response to a previous post, there were 20 of us (3 bass players in the group). I was told there were 150 applications, but I have no idea how we were chosen. Someone asked me what I wrote on my essay, and I had to honestly respond "what essay".....so I guess it wasn't that crucial.

There was a lot more I could have said in my previous post, but I cut it short for the Forum. Whenever I go back over the experience in my mind, I remember some additional experience or goodie that Fender provided us.

I thought it was a great opportunity and bargain BEFORE I found out about the swag bag with all the great goodies, the Tom Petty Concert, the fact that we had concerts with our meals, the 3 great meals each day, Tony Franklin, Greg Koch and others being there for the whole time, and of course the help, friendship and general great attitude all the Fender staff showed us. We were the ones treated like privileged celebrities.

A long time ago I read an article in Outside Magazine referring to the concept of making a "life list"; you know, a sort of "bucket list". The concept being that instead of just saying "that's something I want to do some day", actually keeping a list of things like that, and most importantly, trying to do at least one of them each year. Otherwise the years flash by and all of a sudden it's too late, or you're too old, or like some of my cancer patients, you waited too long. For me, playing guitar on stage with Greg Koch (a great guy by the way) and Willy Porter at Fender University was one of those "life list" quality things that's worth taking a chance on, maxing out the credit cards, and just going for it.
As a Nike advertisement said: " They say when you die, your life flashes before your eyes. Make it worth watching!"
This experience will definitely be on the highlight reel at that time for me.

So, ZZDoc and others who may be thinking about it, but are put off by the cost, I sure understand. Right after I made the committment and sent in a deposit, my AC/furnace in my home went belly up to the tune of over $5000, so I was saying "Holy s***!". Guess I'll put off some essentials for a while. It's true though that those of us who can afford to do this are truely privileged. At least it gives me a way to compensate for not being able to play worth a damn!

Regards to Theseus and Adrian (who travelled from Singapore and Romania respectively), to Mike (who told me he didn't even have a guitar before signing up, but had always wanted to learn), Paul (the Paul Prudeholme of Arizona), and g-man who have posted so far. I'm looking forward to a class reunion anywhere, any time.

Norm

Well, I actually did have a guitar before going (a nice b/w Squire Fat Strat), I just didn't know how to play it. As I stated in my post, I knew 3 chords. Now I am the VERY proud owner of a gorgeous Cherry Cola American Standard Strat that I practice on every night. The next time I go to the University, or if we get a reunion together, I want to play with you guys.
How 'bout we all meet at Paul's tea room in AZ sometime next year. We could have some biscuits and JAM!
Norm, it was agreat pleasure to meet you and the rest of the group.
As far as a list and pics request from the other post, no list I know of, but a nice pic of all of us at the very beginning of this forum topic.
Peace, love and R&R.

OK Mike, I guess I overstated your lack of experience, but I THOUGHT that was what you said anyway.. It's great that you had this experience and that it motivated you.

Considering the winter weather here in Portland, Oregon, I'd be up for an AZ visit anytime, but by mid January, I'll really be ready. Or we could meet anywhere with warm weather and sunshine!

Hey guys, Sean here.

First and foremost, good to hear everyone made it back safely. Can't even begin to say how much being at Fender University meant to me. And the fact that everyone was so cool was an immeasureable bonus. Seriously, there's always that one guy that messes it up, but not this time. There's always an exception to every rule.

Needless to say I have been thumbing through pictures and replaying the whole experience in my head on an almost daily basis. In fact, I was more than ecstatic when my guitar from Fender U showed up. I had really missed her. After the experience, I feel more driven than ever to learn and keep progressing in guitar. Thanks for making it so cool guys.

Aloha

Welcome to the thread Mike, Norm, Sean.
Back safely? Actually, Sean, carrying a guitar in airports, airplanes... does seem to add consistently to the cool factor. After the initial raised eyebrow ("WHAT do you have in there?"), everybody gets smiling and grinning ("a guitar, sir/ma'am"), from security people to airplane hostesses. Got thumbs up, questions, attention, you name it. Even a high five. Well, by the time I was in Munich, I was already lookin like a walkin cliche - rock tshirt, black jeans, guitar in one hand, bag of whisky bottles in the other...
I vote for the AZ reunion next year. Norm, I can't promise I will stop in Portland, but when I get to Seattle I'll let you know.
By the way guys, Jack is working on a full list of names and email addies.
