The search continues for good music. Here are some mini-reviews
1) Greg Koch, The Grip album. Excellent instrumental electric guitar. Can't listen to the whole album because it gets fatiguing after a while because it's all guitar played mostly fast. But this is a good album. I highly recommend it.

2) Jeff Beck, Jeff Beck's Guitar Shop album. OK, but I will give it to the library.

3) The Best of Roy Clark album. Lots of songs. Not much guitar. This too goes to the library. He is a fine singer, but it's not what I wanted from the album.

4) The Very Best of Curtis Mayfield. No guitar playing that I could detect. Off to the library with this one too.

5) Les Paul and Chet Atkins, Chester and Lester album. Excellent production. Pure instrumental guitar. Well done. Worth listening too if you like electric guitar in the style Les Paul made famous.

6) The Best of Dick Dale and the Deltones. I was hoping for more guitar. Very dated music because it's pure surf and hotrods. To the library with this one.

The big lesson in my search for good guitar music on albums is that the best of it has great rhythm musicians playing with it. Alone, guitar just doesn't sound all that great for extended periods and it's a bit fatiguing.

Here are a couple more recent CDs that I thought were really good:

The Allman Brothers - Hittin' the Note
Derek Trucks plays Duane Allman now in the band and his playing is really really good.

BB King - One Kind Favor
There's another string about this album, but it's good, classic BB. Also, there aren't any guest stars to muddy things up.

I had the opportunity to listen to some pretty good albums this weekend from the Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band (ledbetter Heights, Trouble Is...) and John Mayer's Where The Light Is. The had some good blues guitar work.

Quadroohenia by the Who is really good. Theres some songs that I didn't like at first but when I actually LISTENED to them a second time I fell in love with them

The Beatles' Revolver is (in my opinion) the best Beatle album ever recorded.

Weezer's the Red Album is really good, especially if you need a laugh.
(it's not a making fun of them laugh it's just surprising the things that Rivers decides to write about. He writes about things that some people would think about everyday but never think to write a song about)

And both Drake Bell CDs are good(I don't think a lot of people will agree with me on this one, not many people seem to like him  )

Sgt. Pepper is good too and so is A Hard Day's Night

Bob Dylan/The Band- Before The Flood

I've always like Dylans electric work much better than his original sound, which was more folky and less rockin'.
I think this live album puts Dylan in his best light which is playing with The Band. They put some muscle into his songs and Dylans voice isn't whiny sounding (which is why I dislike some of his early work). The Band also plays some of their best songs, like "The Weight".
Overall this is a very solid live album. I'd give it 3 1/2 out of 4 Stars.

In 2002, Rhino released a remastered box set of the Last Waltz. It's ridculously long. So I just downloaded all the particular tracks that I really wanted, which was still a little over 2 hours long even though greatly pared down. I listen to that all the time ... it is just brilliant.

Alien Love Secrets. It is some of the best Steve Vai w/ Bad Horsie Wah you'll ever hear.

Carol King: Tapestry

Some of the finest songwriting ever. I know it's not rock, but she's in the Hall of Fame for a good reason.
