Is guitar playing like smoking, in the sense that if you don't start by the time you're 18, you probably won't start? Just curious.

Personally, I never had an interest in it until much later.

I started both at a very early age. I gave up on the smoking though.

No, guitar playing is like surfing, except that in music you actually create the wave you ride on.

Wow, never thought of it like that. I did start both when I was about 13. Tried to give up smoking, but never the guitar...interesting point though.

I don't think it is at all like smoking. There are alot of people that come to the forum that are older and starting to play a guitar. I have seen a few post from people that are middle aged and up talking about there first guitar. What makes it harder I think for older people to learn is the time because we do have so many other things we are responsible for when we get older such as family, jobs and the list goes on. When you are young you have school and time to do what ever. As a parent our kids come first and you promote the love of music and the desire for them to learn and supply whats needed to do so. I have givin my son a Sax which he played in the school band for 7 years a half dozon guitars, electric piano, flute and lots of support for his Schooling and his music. Now that he is older I now have more time for those things for myself even though I am still there for him but he don't need me as much as he use to.

Nowadays, smoking probably is more expensive than guitars.

I'm older than dirt, and have only been fooling around with guitars in the last few years.

I don't think that it is. Smoking can cause all kinds of health problems. Guitar playing won't cause cancer.

Interesting concept, however, I find that guitar is more of an extreme obsession than addiction. Then again, I guess you COULD attach them to the same category.

I took lessons when I was 10 and put it away until I was 40. Now Im addicted with no desire to quit. The guitar that is. I quit smoking at 28 and have no desire for that habit.

Both are addictive, in my opinion, so in that regard yeah they are the same.

I played bass for 17 years, I loved being in the band and liked what I played, etc. But if I didn't play for a few days it was no biggie. I could leave for vacation and not give it a second thought.

But in the last 3 1/2 years since I bought an acoustic guitar, I can't set it down. If I don't get even a few minutes to play every day than I feel out of sorts. It's my great relaxer I guess. Sometimes I have to wait til 10:30 or so after everyone else is long in bed and no more interruptions just to get the time.

The guitar has taken the place of smokes in my life, an addiction to look forward to every day, but one I can do in the house.

Middle age here too.

Both occupy time and cost money. Both can be social or private. Guitars take up more space. Guitars have substantial mental and spiritual health benefits and present miniscule physical danger.

Guitars are a much better long term bargain. If one spends the same on both <pack-a-day>, you'd have a better-looking, better-sounding, safer guitar collection after 10 years than cigarette butt collection.

And guitars are re-usable.

Another way that git playing is not like smoking is that some players will drop it for a while (sometimes up to years) before coming back even harder than before. How many smokers can do that?
