I didn't like the sound of the B and high E string that came with my Stratocaster. They sounded too much like mosquito buzzes. So I replaced them with .010 size strings. The sound is now good, however I'd like it to be easier to bend notes. I do a lot of bending.

If I switched to a different brand of .009 or perhaps even .008 strings, can I expect to get good sound? Or will I always have mosquito sound in the two high strings?

Can you recommend a brand of string that works well for you in the lighter gauges?

Different brands and different gauges affect the tone. I spent some time buying different brands and trying them out. I kept a notepad with comments about each brand (too bad I threw it out) until I found a brand I liked. Every now and then I buy a different brand just to try out to see if my taste in strings has changed.

Currently I make my own sets using Dean Markley Blue Steel and Dean Markley Flatwounds.

If I had to recommend one to try out it would be Dean Markley Blue Steel.

Personally stay fairly clear of too-light strings for the reasons you cited. 11s are faves, currently enamoured of DR flats.

Adjusting the tilt of your pups and if there are adjustable polepieces can do a bunch, too.

Bending heavier strings is no biggie; just takes practice / getting used to. Those old bluesmen used to bend 14s and 15s on flat tops....
