Sorry... just trying to throw a little humor in there. :(

If you truly love playing, there's no reason to give it up. So maybe you'll have to get a second job to make ends meet. Or maybe get a new "first job" and make music your past time... no need to give it up altogether though.

Why are you calling it quits? Not satisfying? Not enough money? A better option?

Sorry to be nosey but giving up dreams is a serious matter. I wish you the best.

Often times in life we have to put what we really want to do on a back burner and do what we need to do. You can always do music part time and have fun with it.

I think you might still be able to find something related that's satisfying. I know a horn player how is very good, but needs a day job. He eventually lucked into a day job in marketing of recording services and products. He loves going to work every day.

When I was about 16, I had this fantasy of making it big time and being a rock star (yeah.........but look at my age back then). But then.......the real world started closing in around me, as I got older.

The draft at the time interrupted my life, and I had to take a time out for about 4 years (from my life). That also wrecked all my music playing (bands, etc).

Once I got out of the military and needed a real job.....I realized that I needed money to pay bills etc. More reality began to set in. After going through a few jobs, I settled into one for about 29 years. That job was not compatible for trying to get into bands again (they need to do a lot of practice). I never had holidays off, and most of the time worked weekends, and weird hours. None of that goes with the lifestyle of being in a band.

Well....I got through the 29 years, was able to retire with plenty of money......so in the end.....it was all worth it for me, to stick with a real job. A friend of mine talked me into trying the guitar again, and we've been having a lot of fun in the last 4 years.

So......even if one can't play in a band when he wants to.......it can always still be a fun hobby and a personal enjoyment.

Besides the kind of artists that are "discovered" walking down the street in New York, and signed for their looks, most interviews I have read with successful musicians have the same basic story: Artist practices their craft for years because they love it (keeping their day jobs or voluntarily living in poverty). Artist told by various music industry types they won't make it in music. Artist continues to pursue music because it is simply who they are so they don;t see quitting as an option. Artist is finally recognized for the talent they have had all along and becomes successful.

Many labels turned down the Beatles before they were signed. Hendrix couldn't get recognized until he went to England. Lots of people think Dylan's singing is horrible. Lots of the blues innovators and originators never received recognition until the young white guys they influenced started talking about them.

Long story short, if you don't keep playing music because you love it then you were probably not a musician in the first place. But a man does need to pay his bills. I say keep your day job and practice as much as possible. You can't catch a fish unless your line's in the water.

A great man "The Hawk" Ronnie Hawkins once said "You won't make much money but you'll get more p***y than Fran Sinatra.

Maybe it was the sound guy's fault.

I never had dreams of being a rock star. With me, earning money from playing in bands just seemed to pay better and was more fun than some of the jobs that my friends had. When I was 18, I used to think that when I was old (like 40?) that I would have to give up playing in bands and get another kind of job.

Not so, but...

If I had to do it all over again with today's technology, I would get more involved with recording, producing and audio engineering and only play occasional gigs.

The problem is the goal of being a Rock Star. Not many positions available and frankly these days it's all about looks, not talent. The goal should be doing something you love, regardless of fame and fortune.

If a few bucks come your way once in a while... cool.

If you get flashed by the pretty girl up front once in a while....cool.

Don't do it for the perks, do it because you really enjoy doing it.

Then when those few and rare perks do come along, they're just icing on the cake.

Gigging at local venues is just second to a part-time job at McDonalds. Music is more or less, meant to be an (obsessive) hobby, not so much a career option. No offense, and I don't mean to sound down on you, if I am.

It sucks when reality finally catches up with you...I know the feeling though, I was on summer vacation for the last 15 years, but need to get a real job once I get out of the electronics program I am in. I had to go back to school, because even though I already have a college degree, it seemed like I was either under or over qualified for the jobs I was hoping to get...

Play music because you love music, any other reason for playing music (like getting rich or to get girls) will not last, unless you are Gene Simmons...what a lucky douche bag that guy is...
