Hey everybody! I'm back from my end-of-summer vacation blowout and I have a question (doesn't everyone?).

I spent 2 months saving up the money I needed for an mim strat. Now I am faced with a dilemma. For me, the obvious choices when it comes to cheap amps would be a roland cube 20 amp or a fender g-dec jr. Then a thought occured to me. Maybe I should wait and get a normal fender g-dec. This would take forever to do, but it might be worth it. Any thoughts?

Get the Roland Cube. I have a G-DEC Jr. and the 15W Cube knocks it clean out of the water (the G-DEC is also 15W).

The Cubes are a bit more expensive, but they're well worth it.

thanks! oh, and is there that much of a difference between a roland cube 60w and a 15w? All I see is a huge price difference.

The more wattage an amp has, the louder it gets. For example- a 5W amp is no where near as loud as a 50W amp. This also applies to most sound systems, such as police sirens.

The wattage can also effect the clarity of your tone. Or how well it handles distortion.

I knew about the volume, but it seems like quite a price hike for more sound. Especially since I only neeed a practice amp.

For a practice amp, anything around 5W-15W is good. Those 60W+ are made more for shows than actual practice.

If you're not gigging, you won't need anything over 15 watts. That's enough to crank it up to a good noise if need be, but nothing over the top that you don't have to pay for.

I typically like Fender products and I have not yet played on a G Dec, but my son has a Cube 30 and right now I am using it as a practice amp in my home office. Plenty of power for home use, effects are pretty decent even at low volume. I like it alot, and they are not expensive. He has owned it for 5 years with no problems. Does it compare to my Fender tube amps? No!, but that is like comparing apples and oranges. On the flip side of the coin my Fender amps dont have built in effects.

I do like the Roland Cube amps both 30X and the 15X I have not played a 20X though. I even like the Micro Cube that Roland makes.

Do whatever it is, you really want to do. If you were not patient and bought something you'll settle for.......in the end......later on......will you look back and regret it, that you didn't get what you REALLY wanted? If so......wait, and keep saving.

If you won't regret it later on......then go for something now. Everyone is different on how they look at things.

For me......I'd always look back.......and wish I would've waited and got what it was that I really wanted. Especially in the future, I'd think......"had I waited and saved.......I would've had it by now......." But then, that's just me. Others would think the opposite.

I agree; get what YOU want; not some thing you settled for; if you settle the money and effort it took to earn it is wasted...talk about remorse!

Personally, waiting, working and saving longer and buying the high end of one's desires is a sure way to squash the down the road ick-monster of buyer's remorse.

In your shoes, 'would work for a G-Dec 30. then you will have a small-gig-worthy amp when you are ready.

Best of fortune!

i have a cube 15x, and it has great tone. Really makes my Squier shine. The clean channel is not half bad for a small 15w solid state amp. The lead channel is really versatile, and if i roll of the treble and add bass and mid on the EQ, and turn it up to metal stack on the lead channel, it sounds a lot like a cranked humbucker. Although i really turn the knob to overdrive instead of distortion or metal more often. It gives me a smoother tone.

The two main reasons that i would prefer my cube 15x over a 20x or 30x is because 1 i don't gig, and 2 i really don't like the idea of on-board effects, though it is a little cool. It's cheaper to buy the effects you feel you need with an amp. An amp for beginners only needs a clean and lead channel (with volume separate for each), headphone output, and EQ. Maybe tremolo or reverb, but that's it. So i would get the roland, because it has EQ and its a practice amp with nothing extra but some effects. Now if you suggested a G-Dec or G-Dec 30, it's a different story :)

I sold my G-DEC Jr and got a Cube 30X. I am very happy with the Cube. Both are good amps, I just like the sound of the Cube better. It also has a great power squeeze feature if you play at home a lot. If you like the G-DEC concept, and are considering the high end of the line, get a Line 6 Spider Jam instead. It's a much better amp. We have one and we love it.
