The only reggae I listen to is old, classic Bob Marley.

The only newer stuff I listen to is from Junior Marvin (one of Marley's lead guitarists). He has a new album, I've heard one track from it, and it's on my "to buy" list.

No particular interest in playing or acquiring reggae / ska, tho it is fun to listen to on occasion.

'With Chet and other wide-array-folks, but no interest in rap or death-metal either, and blues seems sadly overplayed-trite.

The old joke about, (Q) "How many guitar players does it take to cover a Stevie Ray Vaughn song?"

(A) "All of them, apparently."

I love ska but nor reggae.

The British ska revival of the late 70's is great to start with.
Most of the 2 tone stuff is pretty good
My favourite ska band would be The Specials

I don't like reggae or ska. I grew up around it and never liked it. It all sounds the same to me.

Bob Marley was possibly the best songwriter who ever lived.

I love reggae and I like old ska also. Sublime is fun to listen to.

But I listen to almost everything. There is good and bad rap, blues, reggae, rock, country etc. You just have to find the type of music you consider good within each genre. If you find music that moves you then it is good music.

I think because this is a guitar-oriented forum most posts talk about guitar-oriented music. There are lots of good players and bands that are not known for guitar but they probably won't be discussed a lot in a group of guitar and bass players.

Personally I am more of a blues player but I like alot of stuff I can't play convincingly.

And by the way, playing reggae and ska well on the guitar is deceptively difficult. Try sitting in with some real, knowledgeable reggae players and prepare for some embarrassment and education. I meet guys all the time who think all blues sounds the same and they think they can play it until they actually sit is with blues guys. Blues takes a lifetime to master and it is definitely not easy to play blues at a world-class level.

And remember, all those drugs you know you did as a kid were supposed to be mind-expanding, not mind-narrowing. ;)

Wow... took me this long to find this thread...
Obviously, I love reggae and ska, reggae's my main genre, both listening and playing.
I can definately see how people think of it as sounding the same, but so does rock, if all you've ever heard is Nickelback, ya know?

I've been in to reggae, basically since I was exposed to it, about 5-6 years ago.
Persoally I really like Roots Reggae (Marley, Black Uhuru, Eek-A-Mouse..), Dub (spacey echo to the max!), Reggae/Rock (Sublime, 311, Expendables...), and Modern Reggae (Katchafire, Iration, Ooklah the Moc)

I could go on forever about it all, but I don't want to look like "That obsessed guy"

However reggae is music, and I liked it (for a short time) when I first heard it. But after a bit, it seemed repetitive and sounded like the same thing over and over. I've never tried to play it, but it seems if I did....I'd be playing one or two chords over and over. I'd probably fall asleep, fall over (guitar in hand), hit the floor, tuning machines would get bent, I might land on one of my cats, have to take it to the vet, and lose a lot of money on vet bills.

For those who like that style......great......but it's just not my cup of tea.

in my opinion its a lot more fun playing the bass in a ska/reggae band than guitar, although there are some excellent guitar players in the genre. Personally I like the groove and the fact that the bass parts are interesting.
