I was thinking of possibly doing some new recording either today or tomorrow since everything on my myspace is extremely outdated. I'll post it if I do.

I record through my computer by plugging my guitar up to a regular 1/4 inch cable, then using a 1/4" to 1/8" adapter to plug it into the back of my mac. I then just use garageband to get effects (unless I like the ones I get better with pedals/ ones I can't get in GB like whammy). Nothing special, but it does the trick in most cases for the casual stuff I do.

I have an =E-Mu 0404 interface
http://www.emu.com/products/product.asp?product=15185

Synopsis of features:
Up to 192Khz sample rate
Provides 2 inputs, strange plugs that can take XLR or 1/4 jacks
s/pidf wired and optical in/out
headphone out
speakers/line out
midi in/out
USB 2.0

Came with a lot of software bundles most useful is
Steinberg Cubase LE which gives you a multtrack recorder.

To install it you need to disable any sound card in your workstation, the E-Mu takes that function over.
Plug in some good monitors like some powered KRK VXT-6's or Rokit-6's(my current monitors are crap but Christmas is coming soon :P ) , jack in your instruments and way you go.

Thing seems to work quite well.
Sorry no samples from me, still too embarrassed with anything I've managed to bash together.

I think I've posted my home studio gear on here someplace, but here goes . . .

My first digital recordings were done on a TASCAM Pocketstudio before switching to a PC-based setup. Now I use an HP Pavilion a-series PC and a Lexicon Lambda interface (comes with Cubase LE and the terrific Lexicon Pantheon reverb plug-in, but I don't use Cubase so I can't use the plug-in).

I usually record direct (no mics) using Sony ACID 6 and Sound Forge 9. The Vibro-Champ XD and Cyber-Champ work well, and I'm experimenting with my Line 6 PODxt again. All of my drum tracks are loops and I highly recommend the products from BetaMonkeyMusic.com. I think ACID is best for using loops and has a more user friendly interface than some of the others. I have a Casio CTK-900 for the synth, EP and B3 parts, though, I've dabbled with MIDI, also.

I still need a pair of good (but inexpensive) monitors as I'm still mixing through headphones. SF9 comes with iZotope mastering plug-ins and red book standard CD burning software, too. And I have a lot to learn about MIDI, VSTs, mixing and mastering.

I've rambled on enough. Home recording threads aren't real popular on this site and die quickly for some reason. You would think there are lots of members with home recording gear.

I'd like to hear from others. Somebody else?

Currently I'm experimenting with a Behringer Guitar Link UCG-102. It comes with Native Instruments Guitar Combo, Audacity, and Krystal for software. I can plug my guitars directly into this unit and use the Guitar Combo for the amp.
I will soon be adding an MXL Mic Mate, GLS Audio ES-57 Mic, and for software Acid Music Studio. I will then be able to mic and record my own amps.

All together for both setups I will be out about $200.00

I was originally going to go with a setup that I plug my amps into and then hook it up to my computer, but after discussing it with my brother (Redmax61) I decided to go this other way instead, And it is turning out to be a little cheaper too.

I guess, given your mention of home recording threads not lasting long, that I wasn't missing them when I was looking for them and ultimately decided to begin this one.

Recently, I started a thread asking for some advice about monitors. Once again, just a handful of replies but at least they offered quality advice. Unfortunately, I'm planning a trip to Europe in October which I found out will set me back about $3K so I'll have to put the monitors on the back burner for now.

I have about a dozen partially finished projects and just can't find the time to complete them.

Same here. I've got so many half done songs and ideas recorded it's ridiculous.

One time a few years ago, I decided to contact some friends in FL and CT about doing a virtual blues band where we would all contribute our parts online. I would collect them and do the rough production. Seemed like a good idea. Some never contributed, but made excuses as to why they didn't get it done. It was no better than a real band with guys missing practices and gigs and all the other frustrations. That's when I decided to do it all myself, and with the home studio I can.

I prefer the hardware route: a Yamaha AW-1600. Bass DI'd straight in, using onboard sims and effects. Guitars mic'd from amps, usually an ADK condenser, sometimes the trusty SM57.

Drums via a Yamaha MG16/6FX mixing desk - 10 XLR inputs from Shure dynamics and ADK condensers - yielding a stereo output to tracks 9 and 10 on the AW-1600. As with any recording, getting a decent drum sound is at least half the battle, especially in a less than ideal smallish room.

Vox through, yet again, an ADK condenser straight into the AW-1600, using onboard verb and other facilities. DT100 headphones; Wharfedale monitors.

In other words, the Yamaha AW-1600 does nearly everything, including CD burning. And it's specs are such that I'll still be happy with it long after much better kit is available.

So why ain't I a huge star? Can't understand it...

Cheers - C

As of this morning I have my Home Recording Gear ordered. I have just over $230 invested. I will be able to record my guitar playing 2 different ways, as well as add bass, drums, etc. with the software.

Here is a list of the recording gear/software I will have.

Behringer Guitar Link UCG102 with this software: Native Instruments Guitar Combo (I, II, III), Audacity, Kristal.

MXL Mic Mate

GLS Audio ES-57 mic and cable.

Sony Acid Music Studio

And related, but not. I doubled the amount of Memory for my computer. I didn't include this in my total.

After my vacation (which starts next week) I'll start experimenting with recording.

Stay Tuned!

It sounds as if you're off to a great start! I will keep an eye out to root for the successes, or to offer any help that I can, based on my own evolution from the analog 4 track days to today's digital setups.
Above all else - do have fun with it!

I plan on having some fun with it. I was beginning to get in a little bit of a rut and figured recording would change things up a bit.

Haven't done one of these in a while because not much has changed in a while . . .

Hardware/Software:
M-Audio Delta 1010 recording interface
Dell Core2Duo, Dual monitors, 2gb RAM, Redundant Hard Drives, etc.
Focusrite, Aphex and Presonus outboard preamps
Behringer compressor/limiter
Behringer 4 channel headphone amp
Behringer Truth monitors
Various headphones
Digidesign Protools
Izotope Ozone
FASoft n-Track
Sony Acid
Audacity
Krystal
Various RTAS and VST plugins and instruments

Mics:
Blue Baby Bottle
Shure SM57
Sennheiser E609
AKG D3600
Blue Ball
AKG D550
AKG D309(x3)
AKG C430(x2)

I do some personal recordings and stuff, but what I do is very heavy and somewhat eclectic. I don't figure too many people have my wierd taste in music.

If you like, you can hear some of it on my myspace page:
http://www.myspace.com/30secondsong

I usually have a pretty good idea of what I want to do before I start, so I go to Acid and glue the drum tracks together. I have quite a library of loops from Betamonkey, and what I don't already have, I can create for the job.

Once I have the drum tracks all rendered out to a single stereo track, I import into either n-Track or Protools. I add a throw track of guitar, just so I can get a feel for what I want the bass to do. Then I record the bass, and go back and layer the guitars, etc. over the top.

Unless I'm recording several tracks at once, everything goes through the Focusrite preamp, just because it sounds awesome! The other preamps go through the compressor/limiter and then into the 1010 when I'm doing stuff like recording a drum kit. Unfortunately, I only have seven preamp channels, so I'm limited to recording seven analog tracks at once.

For bass tracks, I'll either go direct into the Focusrite or mic with my D3600, then go to the Focusrite.

I use either a 57 or E609 on the guitars, then they all go through the Focusrite. I've found what really works for me using the 57, so I don't really need to get too fancy.

Vocals usually get the Baby Bottle into the Focusrite.

I do all of my waveform editing with Audacity. It's fantastic, it's free and it just plain works!

Lastly, everything gets mastered with Ozone.

My favorite for mic'ing amps.

I have a BR864, AT2020s, Digidesign M-Box 2 Mini, assorted processing gear and tube pre-amps, various software (PT 7.4, CuBase, Audacity), M-Audio Mobile Pre and some stuff (mics, mixers, etc) that I'm forgetting about probably.

I've posted this pic before-but those threads are probably buried so deep,it's easier just to repost. I did alot of reading, but as time goes by and with trial and error, I'll actually be trimming down the set up you see here. This is a combination of digital and analog equipment- and I use both. Not real practical, but as I get more comfortable witht recording on the PC, I'll eventually go that route entirely. Anyway here is the current set-up, and actually not a huge cash out lay thanks to Ebay, closeouts, and Christmas! :D
