Yeah, Epi is much more then just cheaper versions of Gibsons.

In some cases, they're even much better (my epiphone elitist is better than a handful of Gibsons I've played)

Both the Elitist and the Masterbuilt guitars are great deals.

Some of the "new" Squiers that I've demo'd play and sound better than much pricier gits...it may even surprise you if you haven't played a Squier "Classic Vibe Model" or one of the "Vintage Modified Series."

Someone I know got a Squier sunburst vintage Strat (gorgeous!) and did some luthier work on it. He added an LSR roller nut with roller Tees and replaced the tuners with Grover chrome Auto-Locks. Then he replaced the SSS pickguard with a custom-wired HSS (w/ coil tap) and the bridge with a Might-Mite that has a pop-in trem arm. Also changed out were the strap buttons for Dunlop Strap-Loks and some Tele-like chrome knobs that have white pearl caps. The thing looks, plays and sounds like a Custom Shop Fender and the total investment was a fraction of an actual custom order. If extra parts were replaced (such as the neck plate) you might never guess it wasn't a 1 to 2G+ Fender even after playing it. In his opinion (and I agree) a top-of-the-line Squier AS IS stands up to any low-priced basic Fender...... and with a few mods easily holds its own with many standard Fenders. It seems to me that the real VISUAL difference is the logo.

I am, in NO way, knocking the beautiful work the Custom Shop does, or any other quality guitar Fender makes. However.....

Some people love to brag about how much loot they blew on a nice axe and the car or house they could have bought instead. (60G for Slash's '59 LP? WOW!) I, personally, enjoy letting these extravagant spenders know how much money they tossed out the window. Sure, they always say "You get what you pay for", BUT it can be a kick to prove them wrong, so I like to show them that with a good eye for a bargain, one CAN acquire quality with out breaking the bank.

You definitely get what you pay for... and you will pay for it in interest for years and years if you overpay for something you could get at a fraction of the cost.

Having said that, while money being no object I would probably keep my Squier.... but definitely not over an American Fender Bass.

Hmmm,
My son's play Squier (Vintage modified Tele Bass) and Epiphone (Goth Les Paul) and the instruments are really pretty good, especially for the price. Fit and finish is good, the only short coming is in the pickups on the Epi Paul.

No they aren't the same level of instrument as USA Fenders and Gibsons.
But they are definately good enough for most applications. Especially if take some time to mod them a bit.

Two observations:
1. The Squier Deluxe Strat is a beautiful instrument. Does it stack up to a MIA Fender - no way. But for a reasonably priced guitar it might surprise you.
2. I own a Squier M80 - one of the Masterbuilt series of a few years back. It was designed by Todd Krause of Fender Custom Shop. Basswood body, mahogany set neck, rosewood fretbord, two Duncan Designed humbucker pickups - a really, really sweet guitar. I wouldn't part with it for 3 times what I paid for it.....

I personally took the aforementioned Strat to a recent gig, along with my '86 PRS and Parker NiteFly. The Strat played so nice and sounded so good on the full variety of songs we did from first set to last, that I used it for the entire gig, never touching either of the other two guitars I'd brought. I've been a pro guitarist for more than 44 years and I was really surprised when the gig was over. A very satisfying experience with a revelation I certainly didn't expect; it really opened my eyes to all my previous (excessive?) expenditures. I must say, however, (from all my experience) there is NO such thing as a cheap amp handeling a gig that a real quality amp can easilly cut. Those are areas where the investment REALLY pays off, especially when it comes to power, tone and high quality speakers.... > Don't choke it all away with a crappy 1/4" cable... duhhhhh! LOL
