Anyone know anything about the Fender Toronado guitar? I ran across a fine looking used MIM Toronado at a pawn shop for very little $$$, but I have never seen one before, and no nothing of their value. I haven't even been able to find any info online yet. :(

If anyone can tell me anything about this guitar, I would GREATLY appreciate it.

Thanks!!! 8)

Gibson has a Thunderbird bass. I doubt Fender could have one too for legal reasons, but I could be wrong. Here's a 64 Thunderbird.

I've never heard of a fender version either. I tried google, but couldn't find much except for the gibson counterpart.

I'm thinking it's the reverse Fender-like headstock that got him.

By the way, I've always loved the Thunderbird bass. Wouldn't mind having one myself one day.

Yeah, the Toronado doesn't look much like a Thunderbird

from "The Illistrated Directory Of Guitars":

The town of Ensenada lies some 70 miles down the Pacific Coast from Tijuana in Mexico's Baja California region. Fender opened a small packaging plant there in 1987, but within a few years, the company's operations south of the border had grown significantly, an the Ensenada factory was producing large quantities of guitars, amplifiers and strings for its US parent: it now occupies over 200,000 squre feet of manufacturing space, employs over 1,000 people, and even boasts its own soccer team!
Most of the instruments made by Fender's Mexican division are mid-price versions of Telecasters, Stratocasters, and other classic designs (the cheapest models, including the company's Squier series, are made in the far east), but in 1998, the first-ever guitar to be both designed and constrructed at Ensenada made its debut. Named the Tornado, it was a solid-body electric with an offset waist and, rather usually for a Fender, two humbucking pickups. Four different finishes where available ("Arctic White," "Black," "Brown Sunburst," and "Candy Apple Red")and the instrument was well received my customers-- though a number of them commented that the guitar sounded more like a Gibson!
In 2002, Fender USA paid the Tornado a significant compliment when, in a reversal of the usual order of things, an American-made version of the Mexican Tornado was introuduced. At the time, the company's vice-president of marketing for guitars and amplifiers, Richard McDonald, commented that the instrument represented "an entirely new direction for Fender guitars in looks, feel, and sound." It featured a choice of pickups (single-coil or Atomic II humbucker) and two alternative colors, "Buttersctoch Blonde" and "Crimson Transparent." One of these US-built Tornados is shown here; a revamped Mexican model with slightly different specifications appeared in 2004.

I seriously hope this anwsers your question, I'm not typeing again for a month. I say buy it.

I would say buy it if it is in good condition and the neck is straight. The going price on Ebay is about $300. Since these guitars have a dual humbucker setup many players put very heavy strings on them without having the properly setup. Also the toronado has a Jaguar type neck scale (24.75 I believe) so it does play similar to a SG. I got my Toronado because I Wanted a dual humbucker sound and I didnt want to hack up my strat. For that small amount of scratch you can get you a set of SD (JB & Jazz) pickups and have a pretty versitile axe if you tap the coil. I wish I could find a HWY 1 Toronado.
