Anyone know what this means. I have basses from different manufacturers, a lot of them have a small square sticker on the neck(usually, sometimes on the neck plate) that have the letters CE. What does it mean?

Hi PowerJazzBass, the acronym CE stands for "Conformité Européenne" wich is the European equivalent of the UL (Underwriter Laboratories) industry standards, wich means it's OK to play. 8)

Cheers.

Claude is right it is just a EU health and safety requirement.

Yes you can remove that sticker. It just lets you know the instrument complies with electrical codes in different countries if I`m not mistaken. That garbage pail with the line through it is letting you know not to throw the guitar in regular garbage and would have to be put in the recycling bin instead because of the electronics within it. On the other hand, who would throw a guitar in the garbage in the first place ?

This question came up once before on another thread and I added a link that explained everything, but I don't remember the site so I used the search function to find the old thread and it turned up nothing. I've had a hard time finding things with it. :x

I did try the search function before posting it. I thought I've seen it before. I wasn't sure if it was here or somewhere else.

I always wondered that too. I just pulled it off and forgot about it.

That CE label appears on virtually everything you buy in Europe. But I have been surprised to see it in pictures here on people's guitars purchased in North America. Does some guy in Iowa care whether his Strat has passed a European Union quality standard?

Maybe it is just easier for Fender to slap the stickers on all their products, rather than ask Fender Europe to un-box them to put the labels on when they arrive. But then why don't we see the quality labels for all the other countries where Fenders are sold too - Australia, Brazil, New Zealand, Norway, etc etc? They presumably have safely standards in those parts of the world too...?

Probably easier to put the stickers at the factory. Less confusion. Europe has always have different standards then everyone. Usually higher, TUV, ISO 9001-3, so if it meets Euro standard, most of the time it'll pass other standards, so maybe that's why. Europe, setting standards of world living since BC times  I kid, I kid.

Well I would presume that having to pass new certifications gives the right to add the CE label. And without it, no sales in CE Countrys. Here in Canada we can see it on a lot of things. Hardware, tools, my IPOD has it engraved on the back. I would also guess that the sticker must be installed before going through customs. Requirements for world business.

Cheers.

I love that sticker!

It took me a while to figure out what it was because I was always looking at it upsidedown.
