Have I NOT had bad band members! In my band (the Bikini Oranges..lol), our guitarist said he wanted to only do metal and agreed on nothing. Our singer didn't want to play except what HE wanted and eventually defeated the purpose of being in a band, because he didn't want to do the talent show and he even rejected ALL possible venues in town. So now its just me and the bassist.

In the praise band, one of the guitarists took the pastor's sarcastic remark seriously and now insists that every song have a very off-key solo. The pastor's wife kept insisting that one of the guitars were out of tune when it was just the other guy playing out of key. Another one of our former acoustic guitarists didn't want to do anything except show off, and he wanted to solo (again, he was off-key) with the already-off-key guitarist and well...it all went south. Same thing with a previous bassist, but now mostly everything is great except one of the 4 singers hates my guts for...unknown reasons. I really wish I knew. :?

very interesting stories. I've never been in a band, I've only been playing bass for a year, but I occasionally jam with some of my friend guitar players, some of which have less expirience than me, and it can be frustrating. This guy takes lessons once a week and only plays that once a week (doesn't practice, has the time though) but wants all these guitars (wants to make a band and play lead) and a really good expensive amp and effects, pedals, etc. He can't play very well, still holds his pick with his fist, only downstrokes, and uses two fingers (but sometimes one) for fretting. I think he has the potential but doesn't practise and wants all this stuff he doesn't deserve as a player. When we jammed I ended up teching him a very simple bass line and I played some simple guitar chords. Pretty sad.

Our drummer is a complete dumb*ss. Currently he doesn't own a drum set, and he is using one owned by the other guitarist. He borrows the drumset, then when he shows up an hour late for practice with it, the cymbal is inside out cause he accidentally stepped on it (or so he says) and there are these dents around the rim from when it fell down a flight of stairs when he tried to fix it (or so he says). Then he tries to explain to us how te cymbal sounds like a splash (or so he says). So now he is supposed to get the other guitarist a new cymbal for his drum set, but if he doesn't, then he's out of the band. We might as well start looking for a new drummer, cause this guy has been b!tching about how he needs new drum sticks for the past few months, but does he ever get his alcoholic, cr*ckhead butt to the music store? Never. I don't know, perhaps bad band members are not as bad as dumb  ss band members

My bands been pretty good on the whole, we all get along reasonably well, i wish we'd do a bit more practice but its generally in good humor, me on bass and the drummer just have to look at each other when we think the other has screwed up and its generally met with a smile, OUr lead guitarist/singer will stop whats hes doing and just yell **** if he screws up then carry on, our rhythm guitarist generally can play thru his mistakes. If both guitarists screw up as long as there is a drumbeat or a bass (preferably both) we can just keep on playing.

Compare this to a couple months ago with out old singer.

She didnt like the key -> stop and yell at us to stop, didnt come in-> yell at us to stop, didnt practice, wouldnt try something new. Then at our first gig just got so drunk our lead guitarist did more vocals than her. We were gonna kick her out the next practice, but she bailed on us, so we just called her to give her the good news.

Mostly freelance...though one band does take priority.

Hence five band members.

Been playing with the same group for almost 25 years. My two brothers and a friend from San Diego. Just added my nephew and a new bass player (used to be a third brother; his nazi wife won't let him gig anymore). We all get along quite well. You know why rythm, keyboard players are usually non problematic, being one (rythm player with a very occasional lead) I should know. We have NO ego to satisfy. I for play for the over all sound. I don't care if the spotlight is on me. The band's sound as a whole is what is important. And, we all sing at least one song each so there is no "singer" who thinks we are his/her backup band!! Works well for us.

I have quite a few horror stories I could tell but some are too nasty and all are too long to abbreviate into one of these posts.
If I can just say that, over time I have found that working with professionally minded people is the only way to go. They are not only better musicians to work with, they have a better character as well.
They don't want to let you down because it lets them down, they tend to be team players.
If you go low, it stays low, all the way down the line.
Aim high and you find a better class of guy, that's how I've found it to be.

Agreed, in my band, if we decide to play a song i don't like, yeah ill object, but if im outnumbered, ill still nut down and learn it the best i can(unless its something really really crap), why, cause playing music in front of people at a pub beats not playing music in front of people at a pub.
