+1. It's ridiculous that everyone thinks they need to have one. I'm quite fine without one. Actually, I think it keeps me more sane than if I would have one. I know people who basically live through their cell phone. I hid it once and they complained incessantly for hours. Actually, if you click the blog link in my profile, I believe the first one that comes up should be about cells phones (I won't post it here because it's quite a bit vulgar).

Well.......here is how I think about it...............

If I'm out, and about, doing my errands, going to the store, and whatever personal business I have to do......say.....driving on the freeway....

And that life changing phone call comes in......do I want to stop all my personal business .......my life.........just to answer a phone call (while my truck is going out of control)......just to hear......"whats up?".

I think not!

I don't mind having a phone to call for emergencies and for minor errands, but I probably wouldn't give my number to anyone except people that I knew wouldn't call me all the time.

I have a son that lives with me. He has a cell phone........When he's in the house, it goes off about.........every 45 seconds, with either a phone call, or a text message. In my house, it sounds like a musical carnival all night long (thinking of buying a grandfather clock, with loud chimes, to compete). I'm told that it's normal for his generation. None of the calls or messages are "earth shaking". It's the "what's up" variety.

(mmmmm...do you think I've been rubbed raw with Cell phones????"

^ It annoys me. EVERYONE in school texts constantly behind the teachers back. I never understood why all their small talk was so important that it couldn't wait. It's a waste of money IMO. Some people even test THE PERSON BESIDE THEM. :?:

I've seen devices in England......that you can buy (online)....that jams cell phones for certain distances (depends on how much money you want to spend, for the distance you want). You just don't know how I've been thinking of getting one......for drivers next to me on the freeway, restaurants, theaters, etc.......just to have an envelope of peace around me.

"Just because"

That sounds like a great invention. If those were moderately priced, I would easily buy one to make people angry.

Like I said........it depends on the distance you want to jam. I'd love to be in a theater or restaurant......with all those life changing phones calls coming in......and press down on that button.

Wait......so I sound hostile to cell phones??????????

Naw.............

Although I am required to have a cell phone for work I never leave it on when I'm driving. I have a blue tooth hands free device for it but I found tha even with that I was often distracted enough to become dangerous. When I'm not driving I turn my phone on and use it as I would my work or home phone.

I too have a cell phone for work, unfortunately. And to make matters worse, I have been told that I will be getting a Blackberry in a month! Oh joy! (Much sarcasm!)

I am thinking of putting up one of these around my house! :)

Having been rear-ended at a red light by someone who did not notice the traffic had stopped. I am not fond of cell phones at all.

What gets me is even with hands free, talkers are visual, you see them waving their hands all over the place to emphasize what they are saying. While the cars carefully follow their lead and weave all over the place as well.

I'm all in favor of placing cell dampening devices in places like theaters and schools.
And the cell system knows where you are and how fast you are moving, (The cell towers have to hand off your signal as you travel from one zone to the next) They should automatically drop signal if you seem to be walking faster than 20mph!

That said I do own a cell, but it is not normally turned on.
I travel long distances on country roads and a breakdown without being able to call of help would be annoying to say the least.

IMHO: Cells like the babble box (tv) are the invention of the Devo!
And we would probably be better off withour either one of these inventions.

Personally, 'am a right lane driver and non-cell phone person.

People even use them on local bicycle paths; on foot, skates and bicycles. Generally wave their arms and weave all the (bleep) over.

Dumb.

Out here in California, since the first of July, hands free devices for cell phones while driving is the law. Other than being a huge boondoggle for Best Buy/Good Guys/Radio Shack, etc., i think it's too early to know if it has had any positive effect. Funny part is, although it does require hands-free talking while driving, it does not require hands-free dialing, and it does not prohibit text-messaging while driving. Go figure. Not a day goes by that I don't see two or three people on their cells behind the wheel, some using the speakerphone, holding it down by the steering wheel and yelling at it. I'm not sure if this counts as hands free or not. One other aspect of the new law is that ALL cellphone use is prohibited for drivers under 18 years old, and since I have a 17 year old on the road, I have no problem with that at all.

The Hands Free Law is only good if it is being strictly enforced. I still see people using their cell phones while driving with no hands free device.
In Jan. 2009 it will also become illegal to text message in a car in the State of Calif.

In MY personal opinion the use of cell phones and like devices should be outlawed completely while operating a motor vehicle. A lot of people can't even walk and chew gum at the same time let alone drive and talk.

a big +1

I once had a website for it. They were about $100. Small, can hide them in your pocket......and when you hit the button, that "life changing" phone call, right next to you, is disconnected.
