One often sees agonized facial expressions and bodily contortions of performing musicians. Also, is it particularly hot on stages? They seem to sweat a lot. Is this just theatrics?

It's sometimes hard to gauge what is theatrics. I recently watched a video of Chet Atkins performing for television close-ups. He was making a lot of unnecessary finger movements with his fretting hand. The movements weren't actuating the strings, but it sure looked good.

mmhmm When you get into something, especially music, it's so easy to make all sorts of wierd faces even if you don't really realize you're doing it. I find it rather amuzing. I've have been told, and sometimes have noticed that I tend to do the same thing sometimes. I guess you're just focusing and your face just gets really into it! haha I was watching a video of SRV I think and he was sweating so bad!! I guess between the lights and just entertaining for that long it must get rather hot!

John Mayer's facial contortions are pretty out there.

I saw Buzz Feiten step forward to take his first solo of the evening: he hit a big, bendy note and pulled an expression like someone had just thrust a marrow up his fundament - I mean a really huge, hard, ridged marrow.

To a man the audience gave such a loud, involuntary, snorty guffaw that it quite put Buzz off the rest of his run. It was all most unfortunate, really. Not one to put in the "stage tricks" thread...

Cheers - C

BB does the ultimate guitar face, but so many times he looks to me like he's trying to keep from sneezing! As for the sweating, we call those stage lights "french fry warmers" for a reason.

Alvin Lee's 'guitar face' with Ten Years After at Woodstock comes to mind.

I suppose it's not all theatrics. I almost started drooling on my guitar once. Another time I dripped sweat on my guitar (but I had just come in from running and had to try perfecting a lick that couldn't wait until after I had showered.)

Only the 3rd episode of SNL. I'll never forget that night.

I remember when I was playing in some bands, I was always soaked in sweat. Maybe because I was playing drums and I was more "active". I don't remember ever playing a gig (indoor or outdoor), where I didn't become soaked in sweat. I just figured it was part of the experience.

I now jam with friends, and always notice that even though it's a guitar, I'm still sweating at a very good rate. In the summer, I point a large fan (not the people kind-I don't have any) at myself to stay dry. I have two extra fans that I give to anyone else playing with me. Without the fans, it can get very uncomfortable. Even with the fans, my hands get sticky after time, and I wash them during a break.

P.S. I don't make faces........

G.E. Smith (formerly bandleader of the SNL band) used to have some really contorted facial expressions when playing.

When I play guitar, I tend to either bite my lip or my tongue, and not much more than that. It's the same face I used in playing video games, though I haven't done that in a long time.
