I have an American P Bass, a Geddy Lee Signature J Bass but I have a really old Charvel Bass. It is Black with PJ pickups, 9v active electronics, extended frets (2 octaves) with serial number printed on neck and I bought it new in 1989. It was at the store for a while I remember that. Anyway I am not sure what actual year it was made. The Serial # is C000708. Yeah thats why I am so interested! Its really really low so its one of the first in whatever series. It is in mint condotion. I mean it looks lik it just came off the shelf. I really want to find out as much as I can about this bass and get a copy of whatever specs and schematics etc still exist! I have contacted Jackson (Fender) and the guitar serial #s @ http://www.jacksonguitars.com/resources ... umbers.php

which Fender said would probably hold true for the basses also. Well I don't really see how it does with the serial numbe I have so the question is what in the world model and year Charvel Bass to I have? Since this is not strictly Fender I will leave an e-mail contact to keep the forum "clean" as it were: revherring@yahoo.com Thanks for your time and consideration in this matter!

I use photobucket.com, it pretty much tells you how to do it. It gives you a link you copy/paste.

OK That should take you to the pictures. I apologize that it is so dirty! The finger prints and dust really get exagerated by the flash! My wife already has made me promise to wipe it down and put new pictures up and as soon as I can steal the camera from her I will!

Yes I like that one too! I put some new pics up there with it wiped down. I still like that one the best. I use my other basses as a background and now you can see what else I have. Any ideas as to the origin of the Charvel? I mean other than what I have already been told or remember from when I got it at Ginsgerg Music in Roswell? (Sorry inside joke for Roswell folks! essentially for 100 years it was the only music store and only one today even although a few have come and gone every decade or 2)

This is also downstairs in the "Game Room" where the pool table, my recording equipment, the kids game cube and other toys are! My son's drums are in his room but everything else in in there! You all should hear him He is 3 years old and can play better than me!

Anybody know where I can go or what I can do to find out more about this bass? I am really at a loss as of how to proceed with the ID process! Thanks again!

You can try www.guitardaterproject.org to see if you get any luck with that.
The only thing I know, it's that Fender owns Charvel now. And you see lots of Charvel back in the '80s and early '90s. I heard they're pretty good. I plyaed with one back in college - it was a used one, not like yours but p bass body with pealy white color, and shark tooth inlays. I didn't amp it up tho.

Bizzarre thing is I am not exactly sure what country it was made in! That year they changed manufacture! I heard the Japan run of less than 2 years was actually an incredible run for quality as the Charvel standards were extremely high at that time. It was subsequent runs later on where the quality of Charvel dropped. Didn't the Charvel line wind up becomming kind of like the Squire brand with regards to Fender and the Jackson brand became the top of the line? Just curious. I remember this for some reason.

I remember in the mid-late 90's Charvel was really at its lowest and the name was scoffed at. At that time even many of the old quality editions were really sneered at because of the quality issues then. I know that Jackson has really regained its former position but Charvel almost doesn't exist. I think they have very few new models in their lineup. Didn't the name actually change to Jackson Guitars? (I mean its not legally Charvel Jackson any more)

Wasn't Charvel the Bass line and Jackson the guitar line for a while in the late 80's early 90's? I have no idea why I am thinking this but I know I was under that impression when I bought the bass.

I'm not sure, but here's straight from the Charvel site: http://www.charvel.com/story.html

Pretty cool history. And you have something they don't make anymore at all, the bass guitar.

Hey Wow they don't make Basses anymore? I wonder what that line I found somehwew was and when? It looked new anyway. I think they had like literally 3 or 4 basses and 2 of those were variants of the same model. I thought they had the Charvel name which soundeds strange since Jackson was the main brand. Anyway thanks again for the help.

Have any suggestions about modifing an American Standard P Bass? It is a 2000 and I want an S1 and was considering putting a Jazz neck (also American) because I tnd to like the thinner neck. I must say though this American is the only thick neck bass I have liked. I imagine it totally blows any value it might hav in the future being non-original? Do you know of any issues with the S1 and that bass? The Geddy Lee was going to be a huge issue putting the S1. I mean new pickups and all new guts. Crazy! Are the necks from Jazz and P Bass interchangable or is there going to be fun changing that too?

Thanks!
