Are you talking about Strat or Tele?

Welcome, FoxHound. I haven’t heard these pickups so I can’t give you my first hand impression. Even so, pretty hard to give a definitive answer as V-Mods are used in Strats, Jags, Telecasters, and even in the Fender Bass lineup.

How they sound depends on where you are playing them and with what. Different guitars, different amplification, different rooms, and so on.

There’s a lot of love and hate for many pickups, and these are no different. Some say these and other pups do not sound like a Strat, Tele, Jazzmaster, Bass or what have you? What does that mean? I’ve been in close contact with Strats for over half a century and my memory of a Strat sound, for example, isn’t necessarily that of others. Which Strat is the standard to judge by? Do all pickups sound like this or that or do they even have to? No. Dah.
If you like the V-Mods that’s your sound. Can’t beat that.

Think of it this way. It was recently announced that today’s Ford Mustang isn’t even a car, and it isn’t a fossil fuel favourite. It’s a crossover electric vehicle.

Is this imposter really a Mustang? Well, the Mustang clubs and typical owners might disagree. One thing for sure, if Ford says it’s a Mustang then it is. If you say the V-Mods sound good then they do.
You could do a lot worse than the V- Mod pickup set IMHO. With the historically popular Alnico 5, Alnico 2, and Alnico 3 magnets used (I have those), and with Tim Shaw, who is well respected for his designs of pickups, my guess is that they will perform well.

One way to look at it is that, briefly, there are old school clarity and hum concerns, often addressed at some compromise before or after the pickup, and new school pickups without noise, but, perhaps, with less clarity usually within reason and, for many reasons, they seem to be increasingly preferred over the alternative as they get better and their marketing increases. Both acceptances vary. You’ll find players in both camps. It really depends on your preference or need.

Trust your ears, FoxHound, and know that you will be the one to match the V-Mods with your choice of guitar and amplification. Best of luck should you pick either.

Cheers!
FSB

Note: I have both noiseless (electric) and non noiseless (electric acoustic) which has more clarity; but, it also has more feedback when I don’t have it under control.

I finally got my V Mod bridge pickup back from fender. Wired up the set with a nice treble bleed, orange drop, no load tone. (Telecaster btw)

My first impression is, they’re very articulate and touch responsive. These things are a different animal from my other Telecasters which are balls-out hot A3. They’re not as mid heavy.

This is actually the first set where I favor the mid position over the neck position in the cleans. And it’s not because the neck pickup isn’t good, it sounds great. But damn, the middle position is just perfect. It’s ridiculously crisp and articulate.

The output meter says moderate, maybe they are, but I don’t have anything around here with less output. I never really understood what “twang” really means, but if my other ones have it, I’d say this bridge pickup has “Twing”. Not to say it’s bad. I don’t mean that in a pejorative sense.

Honestly, I couldn’t find a bad quality about them. Just different, which I welcome. Who wants 3-Telecasters that all sound the same? I was able to play everything from bluesy, to pretty hard-core. Surprisingly, they sounded nice with high gain. Super tight bass, and articulate. Nice note separation.

Being that they’re 5/2, I found that it’s important to angle the pickup heights pretty sharp to balance the string definitions I wanted, but I found a great sweet spot, so I’m happy with them.

I’m glad I got to read your followup, shred6. Nice write up. I agree that different options in guitars that are distinctly different are good. I can get excited about this or that, but it’s like I may love a burger, but different versions always make me happy.

Looks like you found a keeper. It’s always especially rewarding if you even get one of those pickups to knock a home run. Nothing wrong with having those other pickups on 2nd and 3rd base. As long as they’re on base and not struck out that in itself can be satisfaction. Everything in life can’t be a home run.

Enjoy that Tele for some time to come, shred6.

Cheers!
