I remember as a young player in the 1960's being fascinated by gear. I remember seeing those new fender amps around '68-the solid state twins, etc., that were futuristic looking. my amp then were a brownface Princeton, and a 2x12 baldwin with supersound.

so recently I was looking around, and came across the 2x12 Gibson super medalist. I remember them well, seeing them in stores. did a little research, and found a clean one for about 800 bucks on ebay. unfortunately its far away, and is listed for pickup only, so I pass.

then I go on reverb, and spot one there. listed for 2 years now. asking price-ready-$35000.00! I had to check twice. is this amp worth that much? just wondering where somebody came up with that. I do wish him luck. maybe i'll drive to n.y. to pick the ebay one up. less money even after gassing up the car.

Prices for used gear on the secondary market have always been nebulous and seldom based on actual value. It's up to buyers to decide if a particular item is worth the asking price.

yeah I was able to find what is probably the same amp from the same seller listed on Sweetwater. It says in the listing:

"I am a private seller and I am not a store."

This is an individual who has set what I see as a crazy price on this particular item. I've seen similar listings on Amazon where someone wants $30,000 for a carton of milk. Why do they do that? No eye deer.

I remember doing a sales video for a car dealership where it was told that in Toronto someone had listed a Rolls Royce for the low price of X dollars.

Although, it had no major problems, the car sat on the lot until the sales manager asked why the staff couldn’t move the car. It was a great deal for the dealer, and considerable savings were passed on to the prospective customer. Nobody took the deal. The manager made up a new sign raising the price substantially. You guessed it. Less than a week and that Rolls was sold.
So you may be right, Phreddy.

I saw a ‘65 DDRI for less than $500 Cdn (about $377 Amn) on clearance at the local music store, but you had to drive across town and first come first serve. I considered it but, once the profit for the store was figured in, I passed. I was less concerned about the finish which could be updated, but maybe it was a good deal. Yep! Price makes a difference in perception.

Ebay charges the seller several percent of the final selling price. And ebay's dispute resolution process heavily favors buyers -- sellers can get screwed very easily.

So some sellers use ebay as advertising, but don't actually want to sell on ebay. They'll ask a ridiculously high price and hope that someone will call them directly (not contact them through ebay) and offer a reasonable price.

It reduces their selling fees, and reduces the risk of getting screwed by the buyer.

Some of the prices are simply insane. Image

Looking around for comparison, once marketing, supply and demand, brands, builder, markup, and whatnot is factored in, I guess we could say some of the msrp is too.

I've been pondering this lately too phreddybee. I think it does have more to do with how much the buyer is willing to spend for the item than the actual value. Like most guitar players I have chronic G.A.S. so, I will continue looking for the cure or a reasonable facsimile.

I get emails from Heritage Auctions and the prices are set for collectors
more than regular players.

Well, here’s an authentic one to add to the Gibby collection. :P

Thank you for posting Gary. The fellow in the video looks like a Hobbit.

Youse is watching too many late night movies.
But then again, they do exist ya know. When I was in Bantry Bay a leprechaun told me so,
