Putting together a presentation this afternoon, and need to find a good rockin' song that starts out pretty quiet (i.e., "calm before the storm") but then builds into ROCK 'N' ROLL. Any ideas?

how long does this calm have to last?

can't stop - red hot chili peppers
-great little simple riff that start quiet and build in intensity until you get the main riff about 30 seconds in
new born - muse
-about a 1:15 piano intro thats nice and calm, then this riff just breaks in that is extremely heavy
civil war - guns n roses
-starts out with simple acoustic then breaks into some good electric about 1:20 in
longview- green day
- heavy bass intro, but a bit quite until the chorus kicks in
the deepest blues are black - foo fighters
-starts out with some light chords then busts into a heavy chorus
cochise - audioslave
just a bit of random noise and pick scratching building up to an imense morello riff

thats all for now, hope it helps

One of my favorite cresendo's is in Harry Nielson's "Without You". I know it's not hard rock, but man that song builds to a wonderful cresendo.

Harry once said he thought he'd made himself sterile with that high note he hits....

heres some more

parallel universe - red hot chili peppers
-some muted verse and intro then into a heavy chorus

free bird - skynyrd
- well, no real explanation needed

soul - rocco deluca and the burden
-a mellow intro with not much going on, then into some heavy slide guitar

slither - velvet revolver
-starts out with about 20 seconds of just chords then goes into a heavy riff

FREEBIRD haha.

One Rainy Wish by Jimi Hendrix starts out very calm, goes into the best rock chorus ever, but then it goes back into the calm.

Bold as Love by Hendrix starts out pretty calm, goes into a great solo, cools off, fades out, and then comes back with a face-melting solo.

Wait Til Tomorrow off the John Mayer Trio album called TRY! starts off, not necessarily calm, but builds up into a pretty big solo.

The Great Gig in the Sky by Pink Floyd from Dark Side of the Moon has a great build up/ crescendo effect.

My Iron Lung by Radiohead starts out kinda soft, and goes into a faster paced harder sound. Paranoid Android by Radiohead is like a modern fay rock opera. Kinda like Bohemian Rhapsody, which might work as well.

I think Freebird is the best choice. All my other suggestions suck haha.

WAIT, just thought of something. Dear Mr. Fantasy by Traffic. That would work.

Good suggestions so far, guys ... keep 'em coming as I'll be working on this tomorrow too. "Freebird" is a definite contender at this point. :-)

Sorry these aren't real rock and roll songs but:

Eight Days A Week - Beatles
Rollin' And Tumblin' - Clapton (unplugged)
Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd
American Woman - Guess Who
or Roxanne - Police

hehe, probably not heavy enough for ya, but:

Hey Jude - Beatles or Wilson Pickett, I like the Wicked Pickett version myself, since I hate the Beatles. Good song for that kind of effect your looking for. It should also be pretty simple to put together if your cuttin' your time kinda close. Picketts version has Duane Allman playing alittle solo in there also.
