Hey Butch, if you have a place nearby that does amp repairs, it might be worth bringing it in to have a look. Maybe it's an easy fix. But I'm thinking it's probably not worth it if the repairs end up being more than, say $100. If you wanted a cheap backup amp, there are plenty of decent options out there for around that price in the used category. I got my like-new Frontman 25R for $50 on Craigslist. It has a pretty loud sound for it's size (loud enough that I can use it at Church playing with singers and a keyboard).

Thanks... I talked to an electronics tech (also does repairs for the local music store chains), and described the problem with my old Frontman 65r. I thought it was the output transformer, but was told that would be it, as it would have probably caught fire, tripped a circuit in my house, etc... But it is 99.999% sure to be the main preamp circuit board and/or main components built in the preamp board. The sad news is that the cost would well be more than the cost of the amp. :(
Edit: Buffalo, NY huh? Coolness! I was stationed there in the early 80's during my USCG career! I met my wife there too! I have in-laws all over West Seneca, Cheektowaga, Orchard Park, etc... Small world!

Hah! It's indeed a small world. I grew up in Niagara Falls, and my wife is from Cheektowaga. We actually live in Grand Island, now, in between Buffalo and the Falls.

Buffalo is finally starting to see some growth with a revived downtown and lots of new development. Even the football team is doing better these days! :)Hopefully a sign of more good things to come.

Sorry to hear about the old amp, but it appears you're enjoying a more-than-adequate replacement -- thanks again for all the info on the Katana!

Very cool! For a short while (before I got transferred), my wife and I lived at the military housing duplexes at Niagara Falls AFB. It was a crazy drive over Grand Island and down the 190 to the Skyway and Fuhrmann Blvd to the USCG base, day after day...

Anyway, yeah the Boss Katana line of amps are incredible! When you hook up the USB cable to it, install all that software (Boss Tone Studio) and drivers, etc... you can really see the capability of the amp! Every single Boss pedal is listed in there in pull down menus! Don't like the current OD "Crunch" channel sound? Pffffftttt... change it! Pick another pedal from the menu and use that one instead! You could literally spend hours and hours fiddling around with the amp's settings via a laptop computer!!!
