Happy New Year!

As seen in this new video, I went onto Boss/Roland Corp. main website (as per instructions), and I had to update my brand new amp with new updates, firmware, etc.. via USB cable. Totally insane, but I got it done. Boss has an unbelievable website/app/software product called "Boss Tone Studio", where you can connect back up with a USB cable, and totally customize the amp into whatever sound you want. It's freaky... Mess with a knob on the amp, and it changes, live, real time, on the computer screen! Spooky how it works like that!

You can enable distortion, chorus, phaser, flanger, graphic EQ, and about a gazillion other effects! Click the button "Write" and it programs it into the amp as channel 1, channel 2, channel 3, etc...

I used my Gretsch 5122 in this video as I wanted see how the Gretsch would sound with such a modern high tech do-everything-but-make-coffee, type of amp!

This is the brand new Artist version (i.e. 2019)... It's not mkI or mkII... It's Boss's top line model. Even though it's brand new, it still had me do those system updates and firmware and things with a USB cable. The main firmware update section took all of 30 seconds. But it was nerve wracking, just like doing I.T. stuff on a computer with BIOS updates to the motherboard! One false move, one accidental disconnect, power outage, and it's TOAST!
EDIT: Here is the Boss Katana Artist (note the USB cable on the floor...)

Hey there, Butch. Thanks, for using your Gretsch for this example, You were right to show the versatility here. Sounds great. Get your tour bus ready. That one package of goodies will keep you loaded for the performance. Nice!

Nice job! Glad you're enjoying the new amp -- it sounds good in the video. I liked hearing the setting with the chorus effect.

Thanks everyone....

Yeah, when you download all that software from Boss and/or Roland Corp, the full capability of the amp comes through. You literally can make it do anything you want and sound like anything you want! My mind is still blown.... The future is here with these modern high tech amps!

Sound Bank A
Channel 1: Clean with 300ms of slapback delay (Rockabilly sound)
Channel 2: Clean with a lush Chorus sound
Channel 3: Crunch tone with a hint of delay and a 70's vibe type of "old school" rock tone.
Channel 4: Lead tone with a hint of delay and high gain for hard rock/metal guitar solos.

Sound Bank B
Channel 1: Clean with a touch of Phaser, duplicating "Breathe" off Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon".
Channel 2: Crunch tone with Flanger, duplicating "Barracuda" by Heart.
Channel 3: Clean with a touch of Tremolo, duplicating "Crimson & Clover" by Tommy James & The Shondells. Also, the intro to "Midnight Special" by CCR.
Channel 4: "Brown sound" with a touch of Phaser and wicked high gain, duplicating Eddie Van Halen on their first album, on the song "Ain't Talkin 'Bout Love" among others...

Who needs pedals anymore? These modern amps do it all - and they do it well! Seriously, I am still shaking my head in disbelief!

The only pedal I still want to keep is my Dunlop Cry Baby Wah. Yeah, yeah, okay... the Boss amp and it's 300 gazillion effect patches already has Envelope Filter, Auto Wah, Touch Wah, etc.. and they are really cool. But, I just like the manual ability to rock a wah pedal back and forth with my foot. Pfffffttt... My homemade kit from BYOC that is the exact "clone" build of an Ibanez Tube Screamer? The Boss Katana amp already has that patch installed (and it sounds exactly the same!). Analog Delay? Digital Delay? Pfffftt... Pick one! Set your delay time, regeneration, feedback, level, etc... and lock it in. It too will sound exactly like the pedal you already use on your pedalboard!

My mind = blown!

did you get the ga-fc footswitch? i'm thinking of getting 100 mkII this week, and the footswitch will really help. no more pedals needed. and a nice light amp to haul around(compared to my twin reverb).

No... Sadly the GA-FC footswitch as listed as (not included) when you look up the Boss Katana series of amps.

Look online at Sam Ash, Guitar Center, Sweetwater, Amazon, etc... and the darn thing is still listed at $129 bucks!!!
But then you realize what it does and what it can do when connected to the Boss amp! It is worth its weight in gold!

Edit: As soon as payday rolls around, I'm hitting up Guitar Center and picking it up!

Butch, you've officially piqued my interest. I'm seriously going to have to try one out when it comes time to upgrade my amp for church. Have you tried plugging an electric/acoustic into it?

...not yet. it does have a channel dedicated towards that called "acoustic". It is tailor made for acoustic-electric guitars.

The main channels on the Boss Katana series of amps range from sparking clean and sweet to vicious and raunchy:

Acoustic: Dedicated to acoustic-electrics, and very warm and sweet sounding.
Clean: Just what is says. A very nice, shimmering, clean tone.
Crunch: A bluesy sort of 70's "old school" type of overdrive tone, perfect for rhythm guitar.
Lead: A straight ahead, full out, blistering lead guitar sound with high gain and singing sustain.
Brown: A monsterous heavy metal tone, named after Eddie Van Halen's legendary "brown sound".

Just to ease your mind a little - these days you're way less likely to "brick" a device that way. After power loss during updates, modern components will revert to the last firmware rather than half-loading a newer firmware rendering it useless.

Think of it this way - I deal with literally thousands of computers at work. We can't put them all on battery backups every time we need to run a BIOS update. And they need to be updated for security reasons so we update each and every PC, multiple times throughout it's life cycle. Out of those thousands of computers, I can't remember the last time one was bricked and had to go back to the manufacturer.

The Gretsch sounds great through that rig. I love that chorus sound.

Update.... Update... For those not on Facebook, I asked my wife to use my phone and quickly shoot a video up over my left shoulder of my old Fender Frontman 65r amp, with my Gretsch 5122 plugged straight in...

My post on Facebook:
"Well, now that I have my new guitar amp (Boss Katana Artist) all figured out, programmed, updated via USB cable, etc... and it rocks! ...I decided (on a whim) to go back to my old Fender Frontman 65r amp and turn it on. It sounds like a bunch of angry bees buzzing all around, instead of a nice clear (i.e. audible) guitar sound. I asked my wife to use my LG smartphone and shoot a very quick video right up over my left shoulder. RIP, Fender amp. I don't know what to do... Should I try to figure out what's wrong with it, get it fixed, and use it as a backup? Then again, it's no Boss Katana 100 watt, do-everything-but-make-coffee high tech, modern, amplifier!"
