You have the guitar and/or bass and maybe the chops for vocals. How do you record at home?

Do you use microphones, a mixer or interface, pedal output, tape, digital disc, software, online storage, cellphone, tablet. laptop, desktop or what have you? Effects aside, maybe you are using a looper? Maybe, you love the KISS method,

- FSB

———————————————————

Basically in my corner subject to change:

A now dormant 4 ch. 4 track 10” Reel deck
Tape is expensive and not readily available
Occasional 3 head Dolby 7” Reel deck
More for dubbing an end product for playback.

Occasional 3 head DBX/Dolby Cassette deck
Really good especially with metal tapes. DBX is amazingly good but has it’s critics causing it to be difficult to find and not usable without DBX

Dual 3 head Dolby cassette deck
Old school that simultaneously records two cassettes at a time. First discovered another one added in a Japanese studio. Just another tool need be.

Audio CD-R CD-RW changer
Love the read/write recording and programmable dubbing from a changer. Thankfully, I have dozens of blank audio only recording discs and half a dozen audio only erasable discs. These are not computer CDs; although, the more expensive audio versions will work in a computer, but not the other way around. I’d love to have more. They are not available or at least that’s been my experience because American and British discs do not work in Canada. Strange because the deck comes from USA. Calls to the manufacturers confirmed this and information is nil other than typical country coding. Musicians everywhere resented government interference. YMMV

TC Helicon VoiceLive Play GTX has XLR outputs. Also has a quality max 1 minute looper
Good for mixer or interface
TC Helicon Super Cardioid MP-75 vocal mic

Mustang IV
Speaker emulation from hdst jack or mic the speakers. No line outs.

Shure Beta 57A mic

Soundcraft MFXi 8 mixer with Lexicon
Had a Soundcraft EFX12 but upgraded to a more robust repairable version. I’ll probably add a multi track output mixer for the drums, and keep this for PA Sure beats the big pot mono Gates board that I used with a patch bay in the mid 60s.
Samson DK 707 7 piece drum mic set

Focusrite 2i2 interface with branded headset and branded CM25 condenser microphone.

Roland UM-ONE mk2 midi interface for keyboard

Multi media desktop with two internal HDs and two portable HDs, 7.1 available.
Still on Vista because it works, but the browsers are the weakest link and some software moves on, so I’ll supplement it with something else when I find it. A lot of new and old gear comes with latency or other issues, and it’s hard to get similar to what I have because it’s dumbed down or an optimized hot video rich gaming machine or you have to rob a bank
.

Altec Lansing 2.1 setup. Nice but needs updating.

DAWS : Ableton, Cubase, SOUND FORGE Audio Studio, and Amplitude related software.

Oh yeah. An iPhone X with Garage Band not yet used lacking an interface for the moment unless the Roland UM-One mk2 works with it.

Big or small - Your turn.
Have fun with this. :D

I usually (but not always) go guitar and keys into small amp, mic'd up and sent to
an Apogee jam or Tascam interface using Logic or Garageband.

I use some plug ins and do more post editing in the mixing.

Here's a sample of what I get :

Happy 2020!

Thanks, for chimin’ in Rollie and Mike. Easy peasy can be effective for sure. Uh, I have a glass head for my cans. Maybe, I can turn it into a binaural mic to simplify.
Those recordings of yours sound very good as we all know, Mike. Just goes to show one doesn’t have to own Abbey Road Studios to make a great recording. Okay, maybe some great recordings. :D
What you do need is what’s between yer ears and in your soul.
Post production is always good but, understandably it takes a skill set, extra time, and caution. Sometimes, too much is simply too much. Some of the greatest hits were raw, straight through takes, tricks of the trade, and full of mistakes when closely analyzed. :P
Rawk on and join in y’all. Add your home recording choices, likes or dislikes with your related experience or what have you?

Thanks Gary!

I started out using a Boss BR-864 :

Image

After a while I downloaded Audacity and would track in the 864 then export to
Audacity and tweak the track(s) to my liking.

Audacity is open source and has had some real nice updates through the years
and you can't beat the cost (free)!

Thanks, for the link, Mike. That BR-864 is a pretty skookum piece of gear. I’ve never seen that before.

I seem to recall using Audacity many years ago to clean up some recordings. I agree it’s more than worth the price.

Boss has shrunken the several older BR stand alone digital multitrackers
down to this now:

...and yes, Audacity is far from a one trick pony.

Audacity can be used to perform a number of audio editing and recording tasks such as making ringtones, mixing stereo tracks, transferring tapes and records to computer or CD, splitting recordings into separate tracks and more. (and again, it's free!)

I have a fairly basic setup and at the moment I'm not getting satisfactory results on a recording project I started a couple of months ago. I have a Zoom G2 multi effects pedal that I plug the guitar into, it's output goes to the mic port on my computer's sound card and I can hear the guitar through the computer's sound output. On the computer I have Audacity which I use for recording and editing I also have Reaper but haven't used it yet. I used to have Adobe Audition which was great for recording and editing but lost it in a computer failure some years ago.

The thing is I just need to upgrade but keep putting it off.

Thanks, Steve for posting your recording setup and whatnot. As I mentioned earlier, a basic setup is perfectly fine in many cases, and often preferable. I kinda like that, but I’m not keen on setting up, tearing down, and setting up the next instrument or part of it. I’m still in the organizing stage, and yet simplifying for those occasions I only want to record guitar and/or vocal I can do it, but still need to add a simple iPhone interface since I am still without a laptop blah blah.

That Zoom G2 pedal will give you lots of options and I feel for you having lost Adobe Audition. Bummer.

If I can make you feel better about that, I loaded and unloaded a new plug-in that at this point stops me from opening up Ableton. It’s pretty well loaded up the way I like it with lots of version supplied and added extras and, fortunately there are not a lot of have to have hit recordings. However, my first Strat recording with a complete mix is on there, and the settings for an effect I need is irreplaceable because I don’t recall how I managed to make it and it just worked. It involves slowing down the recording with a fabricated Big Ben effect all done with the Strat. I likely will lose it all if I re-install. I was just about to complete the recording with a few tweaks to clean up any errors or such. Backup doesn’t always keep or reproduce everything. Unfortunately, neither does my memory. :( I hope you didn’t lose much on your end with your computer failure.

Reaper gets lots of attention. That should be a welcomed addition with Audacity already in your toolbox.

Cheers!

Mike, I just looked this Micro BR up and saw that it is now discontinued. I don’t know about the 4 track but It appears that there is a better display with the existing 8 track BR-80. Mind you that’s apples to grapefruit.
A full blown DAW with extras others don’t have? They have their audacity! :P

This was my setup from about 6 years ago. It's changed and grown quite a bit since moving in 2014.

Thanks for adding your setup, Ghost. That FL Studio Producer is a packed to the hilt DAW to be sure. Pretty interesting stuff. Congrats on the Audio Engineer degree too. I got lost at Formula Controller  I might have made my way outa the woods, but I might have needed a little help before I fell off the cliff. :P
The convenience of the USB on the Mustangs is über handy and I forgot to mention that. Are you preferring the mic or the USB with either the acoustic/electric, electric and/or bass? Have you taken a speaker emulation out from the hdst. jack?

Also, for those who are not aware because the manual is vague omitting this fact, as I know you are aware Ghost, it has been reported that those with Mustangs’ FX Send (at least with IIII. IV and V) can perform the same as a line out with all that the speaker plays. Unlike the usual response, the speaker will still function throughout unless the Return is plugged. I haven't tried It but that is the scuttle butt.

I raise this because there are some that mic their amp and at the same time take a signal out from one of their other choices. In fact there are also speaker emulation pedals available. Phasing could be an issue when mixing a mic and emulator however, but obviously not always. Sort of like the method of miking the front and back of an open cabinet or adding an ambient mic yada yada. Whoo boy!
‘69 Super Reverb and Martin. Nice!

Gotta ask how the Jazz Bass uses the Mustang amp setup. That’s pretty interesting.

Well, that’s a pretty nice setup you have there, Mike. Gives me an idea. I recently brought home an extra TV/Monitor (32”) that belonged to my Mom, and I haven’t decided where to put it as I also have my mother-in-law’s plus two of our own. I thought I might use it for lyrics with a page turner. Your arrangement would be a great alternative solution. I’m guessing you are running two computers here? Are your speakers (monitors) Yammys or JBLs?

Love the alarm clock. Puts a whole new meaning to a studio and working by the clock.

Yes and the monitor speakers were Advent (built by Henry Kloss, who is the K in KLH speakers) :

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advent_Corporation

I'm using JBL model LSR305 now with a sub woofer.
