I read an unpleasant statistic in the BBC News this morning.

2019 set a new record for mass killings in the U.S. A mass killing is an incident where at least 4 people were killed. The new record, set this year, is 41. That's one mass killing every 9 days! 211 people lost their lives in these incidents.

Very unpleasant statistic, Mark!

I'm guessing that the opiod epidemic and vaping stats would be up there too!

Miami Mike,

Thanks for your post.

Marky, can you cite a reference? I often turn to the BBC to get any semblance of news because I can't get it from CNN, MSNBC, or Fox. But I don't accept it as truth. Hell, I'd settle for anywhere I could get the news without a Sh!tload of opinion.

Why is the "magic" number 4? Not 3 or 5? Why not 1? What were the cause of deaths? Gunshots? Stabbings? Run over by a vehicle?
I would submit any unnecessary death is unacceptable, but I'm not ready to accept the reason is something that some news organization thinks is the "reason".

Don't misunderstand me, I'm not your enemy, I usually enjoy your posts, I'm just sick and tired of crap that gets posted ad infinitum.

Brad, I apologize in advance. If it gets me banned, so be it. I'll gladly "own" it.

Best regards,
vinyl

No problem, vinyl, I enjoy your posts too. I read the BBC News on my Android phone for the same reason as you. I don't care much for CNN, MSNBC, Fox or regular network news. I found the article on the BBC website for you:

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-50936575

The method of the killings is mostly guns but the statistic includes all methods. As for the magic number 4. I have no clue who came up with that. Maybe the FBI? I don't know.

Thanks, Marky

I did go to the BBC website trying to find the article, I guess I didn't spend enough time trying to find it.

Wouldn't it be nice to have a website to just get the news?

Cheers,
vinyl

It sure would. Maybe we could call it, The Facts. Just tell us exactly what happened and each of us can decide what we think about it.

Cheers,

Vinyl, you make a good point about shoddy news. Opinionated editorials have moved from the comment section following the News to preceding or even being the news. News gathering procedures often amplify this.

Having worked in newsrooms, against my preference and having a variety program background, but also having a journalistic education and experience in transferable skills, a couple of things irritate me: Trending buzz words shared to promote “look at me too” or “I got that”, political correctness vocalized without prior major support for silly matters such as “fisher” instead of “fisherman” when fisherman will do (not when it doesn't), special interest when it isn’t special or when others or all are special (peoples have replaced people and that is pretty divisive, but makes for great subject matter IMHO), timely polls that are location, location, location with a pretty well expected result but not a balanced one (and there are as many wrong ways to do them as there are right ways), statistics that are manipulated, perhaps borrowed without verifications, stats that may not be suitable across the board, and researchers and analysis void of credibility or lacking in respect by others in the know. Many highly rated statistic groups including Stats Canada here and others like them have gone from being in the top tier to the lesser levels simply because of society, industry, and political change (follow the money). Science, for example, versus belief and announcement has confirmed in Scientific American that economists simply will fail time and time again because the math proves it. That’s not reflected in the business news, except in part. If I hear or read that Canadians, Americans, Brits, or any other nationality says or thinks this or that one more time, I’ll introduce the words “some” and “many but not all” to the media.

Ever notice how the News adds a fact or rebuttal to support the story? If the story is suspect, using the same information as the reference will only add to the folly. That’s an art in itself. It’s sort of like calling a replay of a boxing match with a knockout. “Well, the champ shoulda used a left instead of a right uppercut to get that knockout.” Whoo boy! Pass the popcorn while I burp.

Want to stop the violence? Get the media to stop giving a crash course with detailed (too much information) examples of how the act was done. Sometimes, it’s like giving the audience a military how to or ammo reference magazine. Not good.

As for freedom of the press, it doesn’t mean freedom of the airwaves or distribution which are privileges and not rights. That means they qualify to stand in the naughty corner.

Oh, and ditch the “Late Breaking” joke. It gets worse with replays by other networks. Brilliant.
I digress except to say that, with the NEWS, 2019 - The Year in Review is, unfortunately, likely to repeat itself in spades in 2020.

Watching fireworks on the harbour bridge as Sydney Australia (and elsewhere) brings in 2020. Happy New Year Aussies, and to everyone here and far.

All the best for 2020. Albeit interesting, I have a feeling it will be a good year.

Play it safe, and play it with music.

Peace.

- Gary

I would probably add "explosive" to your "Late Breaking" comment.

As far as polls go, location does play a part, but I would say how is the question worded? One of the most recent polls goes " Are you better off than you were 4 years ago?" What does that mean? Yes, I would say I'm probably better off financially, but 4 years ago I didn't have cancer.

Or 4 years ago, I didn't have some other life altering event that changed my life.

My point here is I think polls are worded intentionally to be obfuscating sometimes.

Never the less, it's my sincerest wishes that 2020 brings a new year that brings "all the best" for all of the members here. Regardless of whatever trials and tribulations you may face.
Cheers,
vinyl

Thanks but I was just reminded that the decade ends Jan 1, 2021. Remember
back to 2000, then 2001 started the next decade.

Technically Mike is correct.

I still extend my best wishes for the new year to everyone here (including Mike) regardless.
