I was at the state fair the other night and walked past one of the live bands. There was a Stratocaster on a stand and it looked very vulnerable to damage there. I'd want something durable in a situation like that.

I was reflecting on the toughness of the Stratocaster and why it is valued by so many musicians for that quality. I imagine that guitars must get knocked over pretty frequently on band stands.

Well..... I heard a story years ago about a local musician (excellent guitarist) who was playing a gig with his Gold-Top LP he'd had since day one...... during the last break, it somehow it fell out of the stand, hit the stage edge and snapped the neck at the nut. Needless to say, he broke down in tears and later took up doing a single act on acoustic guitar. I'm not sure if he ever went back to electric. (Guess he should've played a Tele or a Strat, eh? At least bolt-ons can be replaced much easier.)

Bad excuse to quit a Les Paul, if he loved that guitar to much, he can still get it fixed and it will still play like before.

Ain't it great? If you drop a Strat, it doesn't break into 1000 little pieces like a Gibson would...if it gets damaged at all. Plus they look and sound beautiful. :D

Well boys lemme tell ya, Fender guitars are extremely durable. I have since mellowed with age but "back in the day" when ,gigging in less than top flight venues, I used my Strats as both offensive and defensive weapons when a mosh pit got out of hand. Maybe a paint chip or a scratch but no structural damage.

Try that with a wussie $@! Gibson, PRS etc

Au Contrare... If you weren't there at the ORIGINAL '69 Woodstock, (like I was) check the movie and watch as Pete Townsend TRIES to smash a Gibson SG..... the only damage was the strap button slammed up inside the bottom. But look at what he did with Fenders and (especially) Rickenbackers.... he defined the word: 'Smither-eens'..... hehehe

That must have been the one Gibson that they made right!

But seriously, there are numerous examples of Gibson headstocks snapping off simply because the guitar fell off a guitar stand.

Yeah the SG (which stands for "solid guitar") is a durable beast. They just aren't as rugged as Fenders.
